Heavy Equipment Mechanic

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on heavy construction vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Reporting to the Fleet Shop General Foreman and Lead Mechanic, this role services a wide range of equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, front-end loaders, motor graders, tractor-trailers, water trucks, and other construction vehicles.

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will work in a shop or field environment, depending on operational needs. Previous experience working in a heavy equipment shop, in the field, or both is required. The position requires strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, adherence to safety and maintenance standards, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The mechanic may also provide guidance and training to apprentice mechanics and other personnel involved in equipment inspection, maintenance, and repair.

Essential Duties

• Inspect heavy construction vehicles and equipment to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other operational malfunctions.
• Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment.
• Troubleshoot, adjust, repair, and replace major components and systems.
• Disassemble, repair, and reassemble vehicle and equipment components.
• Perform preventive maintenance services.
• Operate vehicles and heavy equipment to diagnose mechanical issues.
• Perform maintenance and repair work in arctic and other extreme weather conditions.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Assist with maintaining parts, materials, and supply inventories.
• Complete maintenance records, repair documentation, and other required reports.
• Follow all applicable safety regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
• Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.
• Support AES zero-incident safety culture.
• Other duties will be assigned to this position as needed.

Required Experience

• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
• A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• A valid (U.S issued) Driver's License is required.
• A North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) safety training certification is required.
• The ability to work 84 hours a week on a 2x2 or 3x3 rotation in a shop or field environment is required.
• At least five (5) years of experience troubleshooting and repairing power trains, hydraulic, air and electrical systems is required.
• At least five (5) years of experience maintaining, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing Kenworth and Western Star tractors, 50-150 ton Link-Belt and Grove cranes, Caterpillar D9 dozers and excavators, 14H/16H motor graders, vibratory compactors, Genie manlifts, Westmark tankers and vacuum trailers, and Volvo L70L220 wheel loaders is required.
• Extensive experience utilizing Cat, Volvo, Cummins, John Deere, and/or Detroit diagnostic troubleshooting programs is required.

Preferred Experience

• Five (5) or more years of experience working as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic in a shop or field environment specifically in the Petrochemical or Oil and Gas industry, on the North Slope, and/or in other Arctic environment is preferred.
• Ten (10) or more years of experience repairing Cat, Cummins, John Deere, Volvo, Detroit, and Kubota engines as well as Cat, Volvo, Genie, Link Belt, Kenworth, and other heavy equipment is preferred.
• A valid (U.S issued, Alaska compliant) Class A or B CDL with a current DOT Medical Card is preferred.
• Dealership experience or Vocational Training is preferred.

Working On The North Slope

While working on the North Slope of Alaska, your lodging and food will be provided to you. All camps provide warm meals and options to grab a quick lunch or snack from the spike rooms. Rooms vary from single status to shared rooms where your roommate may work the opposite shift. Wi-Fi and Internet is free and available within the camp. Services vary depending upon where you are staying; however, most facilities offer housekeeping, self-serve laundry, commissary, mail, gyms, TV/Theater Room, etc. Each facility will have its own accommodation and policies that will be reviewed upon on-site orientation.
