Summary This position is located in Facility Management Service, Boise, VA Medical Center, Boise, ID. Responsibilities Major duties include but is not limited to: Performs a variety of carpentry tasks as needed to maintain, repair, or complete minor project work for offices, residential bed rooms, shops, warehouses, dining areas, medical areas and other areas on both the interior and exterior of buildings Uses of techniques for constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness Adapt with in-field modifications to fit older structures and must always adhere to best practices, code requirements, and policies and procedures Completes work order repairs, maintenance, and modification via the work order system and includes the installation of framing, wall board, composition board, sheathings, etc., for walls, floors, stairs, ceilings and roofs, installs dropped ceilings Prepares underlayment, including patching concrete areas; and lays such types of flooring as rolled vinyl, vinyl tiles, ceramic tile and hardwood Repairs tiles, ceramic tile, hardwood, and other types of flooring and wall finishes Repairs, textures, and paints as needed when repairing or installing wallboard, composition board, tile and siding Maintains roofs using composition and wooden shingles, repairs trim areas. Repairs and installs windows, screens and shades, doors, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, hardware and locks Cuts and replaces glass panes; measures, cuts, shapes and installs moldings and trim pieces Builds forms, pours and finishes concrete and does masonry work including making repairs and laying new bricks and blocks Builds and installs such items as shelves, bins, cabinets and framed boards; covers some items with formica or plastic laminates Installs various types of hardware and such wall mounted items as soap dispensers and display cases Operates such power and hand tools as hammers, saws, planers, jointers, routers, mortises, sanders, grinders, drills and drill presses Properly uses, performs operator maintenance on and stores tools and equipment, both during and after work is completed Works with and guides the work of patients, temporary carpenters and occasionally apprentice carpenters Maybe called upon to assist in small scale asbestos abatement projects, in the trade, as necessary Possess a valid state driver's license and a U.S. Government motor vehicle operator's identification card within sixty (60) days of assignment to this position Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 6am-230pm MST Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD60130A Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Subject to background/security investigation Pre-employment physical required Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/16/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element: The ability to do the work of a Carpenter without more than normal Supervision Examples include: Use techniques for constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness; studies blueprints, sketches, and work orders; fit, install, and maintain finished hardware such as locks and kick plates. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and year ending dates AND hours worked per week. Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The employee performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent will require the ability to work in a variety of work sites, including, roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee is standing or walking most of the time. Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, workers may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. They are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. Carpentry workers may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
