Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) - RPSGT

Summary The primary duties of the Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) - RPSGT are to independently monitor patients during all stages of sleep utilizing a variety of sophisticated recording devices, score and analyze sleep stages in clinical polysomnographic (PSG) recordings, and perform interventions such as positive airway pressure and oxygen therapies with minimal supervision. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation but is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable; training that does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with relevant standards. Basic K.S.A.: Knowledge of basic medical terminology and ability to learn equipment settings and patient reactions. GS-5, GS-6, GS-7, GS-8: Experience of at least one year at each level is required, including knowledge of standard polysomnographic equipment, CPAP operation, sleep stage analysis, and documentation. GS-8: Advanced knowledge of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, ability to recognize uncommon or rare sleep disorders, summarize and report polysomnographic data, and provide briefings to hospital staff. Duties Operate and monitor equipment for overnight sleep studies (PSG), including EEG, EOG, EKG, EMG, respiratory channels, and oxygen saturation. Apply electrodes and transducers, including thoracic and abdominal belts, pulse oximeter probes, respiratory belts, and nasal/oral sensors, following recognized standards. Recognize and interpret sleep apnea, REM behavior disorder, nocturnal seizures, parasomnias, and other sleep-related events. Make real-time adjustments to recording parameters and perform artifact detection and elimination. Maintain equipment cleanliness, calibration, and proper inventory of supplies. Score and analyze sleep stages and events, producing accurate reports and neurological interpretations. Assist with and supervise Home Sleep Testing (HST) programs, including remote technician training and data downloading. Participate in patient education, including CPAP setup and compliance monitoring. Adhere to safety, infection control, and quality standards for all procedures.
