Dirt Equipment Operator Heavy

S & B Engineers and Constructors

OVERVIEW

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of a variety of heavy equipment used in industrial construction earthwork activities. This includes but is not limited to dozers, excavators, backhoes, front-end loaders, motor graders, track hoes, and other related equipment. Operators perform tasks such as site preparation, grading, excavation, trenching, backfilling and material placement in support of project construction requirements in compliance with company and OSHA 1910/1926 requirements. Possesses NCCER Certification (written and practical) on 2 or more pieces of equipment classified as Heavy Equipment.

EDUCATION:

Must be able to read and understand/comprehend effectively in English or the language set by the manufacturer of the equipment. Must have the ability to read, understand, and apply information from equipment operator's manuals, safety manuals, load charts, and related technical documents. Must pass all in-house equipment written and performance evaluations. Must demonstrated ability to interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and/or site layouts.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of four (4) years as an Equipment Operator in refinery chemical, petrochemical or similar plant construction or maintenance, performing the work described herein. Must know how to perform the work described herein. Must work within precise limits or standards of accuracy, make decisions based on measured criteria, read and understand drawings and specifications, visualize objects in three dimensions from flat drawings, read and understand safety instructions, signs and labels, be able to follow instructions both verbally and written. Requires current valid driver's license and three (3) years clear driving history. Must satisfy all procedural requirements to operate heavy equipment as required in the S&B HEO COM, make and model specific.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate assigned heavy equipment (e.g., dozers, excavators, backhoes, loaders, motor graders, dump trucks) safely and efficiently to complete excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, and material placement.
  • Perform daily pre-use and post-use equipment inspections, report defects, damage, or unsafe conditions to supervision immediately.
  • Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning or lubing/greasing of assigned equipment.
  • Follow work instructions, grade stakes, drawings, and signal person directions to achieve required specifications and tolerances.
  • Maintain awareness of underground utilities, overhead obstructions, personnel, and other equipment in the work area to prevent incidents.
  • Load, haul, and dump soil, rock, and other materials in compliance with project plans and safety procedures.
  • Assist in setting up excavation protection systems (e.g., trench boxes, shoring, sloping) in accordance with OSHA 1926 Subpart P.
  • Communicate effectively with ground crews, signalers, and supervisors to coordinate safe and productive operations.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas; ensure equipment is secured and stored properly when not in use.
  • Comply with all company policies, client requirements, and regulatory standards for equipment operation, environmental protection, and jobsite safety.
  • Must know the manufacturer's specifications and limitations applicable to the operation of assigned equipment, such as load capacities, operating speeds, special hazard warnings and instructions.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to effectively verbally communicate directions from craft supervisors and respond to questions from clients, managers and coworkers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) necessary for calculating distances, depths, slopes, and material quantities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must work easily and skillfully with hands, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, see well (either normally or with correction), hear well (either naturally or with correction) in order to recognize safety alarms and signals and the various sounds of danger associated with construction or maintenance projects, climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, maneuver in tight working quarters, and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions associated with refinery, chemical or petrochemical facilities. Must be medically cleared for respirator usage. Must be able to wear properly fitting respirators.
  • Has distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses
  • Field of vision of at least 70°in the horizontal meridian in each eye
  • Ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber
  • Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus currently requiring insulin for control
  • Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease, which interferes with our ability to control and operate equipment.
  • Has no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis, or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure
  • Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of epilepsy or any other condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or any loss of ability to control equipment
  • Must Constantly wear fall protection equipment, about 5 lbs., when leaving the ground to work in any area.
  • A person's weight and tools/equipment including clothing must comply with manufacturer's specifications and/or restrictions related to use of ladders and/or fall protection equipment.
  • Must be able to climb various heights.
  • Project Manager must approve all variances based on availability of work not requiring fall protection equipment.

Move about on foot.

Remaining on one's feet in an upright position at a workstation without moving about.
