Colorado WINS has been on the cutting edge of building power for Colorado’s public sector workers and advancing economic, racial, and social justice. In 2020, we helped pass historic legislation granting collective bargaining rights to state employees, and in 2024, we ratified our second statewide contract covering over 27,000 workers. Now, we are launching an ambitious new campaign to win collective bargaining rights for all non-instructional workers at Colorado’s public institutions of higher education.

Colorado’s public employees keep the state running — maintaining roads and bridges, protecting clean water and air, caring for veterans and those with disabilities, and supporting safe communities. On college and university campuses, they provide critical services that make higher education possible: keeping facilities safe and clean, supporting students, maintaining technology and research infrastructure, and managing day-to-day operations that sustain learning environments.

As a Colorado WINS Organizer , you’ll be on the front lines of this historic effort — helping workers come together, build power, and win a real voice on the job. Working closely with the campaign director, staff team, and member leaders, organizers identify and develop worker leaders, form organizing committees, and plan actions that move campaigns forward. They help design and execute issue-based campaigns that improve workplace conditions and strengthen our movement for justice.

Organizers receive on-the-job training, mentorship, and opportunities for continued growth through Colorado WINS and our partner unions. A week in the life may include visiting campuses and worksites, supporting digital outreach, building relationships, and mobilizing members to take collective action.

This position is based in Denver/Northern Colorado.

Primary Responsibilities 

• Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to higher education workers 
• Building one-on-one relationships with workers 
• Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns 
• Conducting individual/group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns
• Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to become members, take action, and lead other state workers to do the same 
• Coordinating with workers to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization
• Triaging employee issues to determine the best course of action 
• Engaging members in direct action and political action that is ground in union values
• Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

• A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required 
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
• Capacity to work independently and with a team 
• The ability to make and follow through on a work plan 
• Sharp communications skills 
• Basic writing and computer skills 
• The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds 
• Willingness to conduct house visits and site visits 
• Previous experience in union or community organizing is desirable
• A car and a valid driver’s license are required
• Ability to pass a background check to enter secure state facilities

Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required. COWINS pays a 6% premium for bilingual skills.

SALARY & BENEFITS 
The salary for this position starts at $67,353. Starting salary can increase based on experience.

Full benefits package including health insurance, a pension plan, paid vacation, bilingual differential, and monthly car allowance.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
