Cytogenetic Tech Associate - Clinical Lab Expert

Under direct supervision, coordinates and participates in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in screening slides of clinical specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions. Responsibilities Prepares tissue culture specimens using cytogenetics culturing and harvesting procedures. Performs slide preparation and staining for microscopic analysis using routine banding techniques. Selects banding technique, and stains slide to make chromosomes visible under microscope, following standard laboratory procedures. Performs routine chromosome analysis and FISH techniques. Maintains detailed QA/QC documentation of specimens and reagents. Participates in and performs process improvement validation studies. Performs all other duties as assigned. Qualifications Experience in preparing and processing tissue culture specimens using cytogenetics culturing and harvesting procedures. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment and conduct assessments to record the lab equipment's performance. Ability to operate in a fast paced environment with established time constraints. Ability to communicate complex Genetics concepts. Ability to routinely safeguard and handle irretrievable specimen types. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Education: Bachelors degree in Cytogenetics from a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), or a Bachelors degree in the biological, chemical and/or medical sciences is required. Experience: One (1) year experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory is preferred. Additional Licenses/Certifications: Certified or eligible to take the Clinical Cytogenetics Board of Certification exam given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48. Required Skills One (1) year experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory is preferred.
