Job Description
Appraiser, Post-War and Contemporary Art
\n \nLocation: New York, NY | Hybrid preferred; remote option available
\nEmployment: Full-time
\nCompensation: $80,000–$90,000 base salary, based on experience, plus equity options, medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), and generous PTO
\n \nAbout Appraisal Bureau
\n \nAppraisal Bureau is the system of record and valuation infrastructure for art collections, operating at the intersection of art, technology, and finance.
\n \nWe provide independent, conflict-free valuation and collection management infrastructure for private collectors, family offices, museums, financial institutions, advisors, and other organizations. Our technology brings collection records, market data, and professional appraisal workflows together in a single platform.
\n \nThe Role
\n \nWe are seeking an experienced Contemporary Art Appraiser to join our growing appraisal team.
\nThis is an opportunity to work with some of the strongest collections of contemporary art globally while practicing appraisal in a fundamentally modern environment. Our appraisers work directly within Appraisal Bureau’s proprietary platform, using technology-enabled and AI-supported workflows designed to make research, market analysis, valuation, and report production more efficient and rigorous.
\n \nTechnology supports the process, while professional expertise and judgment remain at the center of every valuation. The appraiser will research and value contemporary artworks, analyze comparable sales and broader market data, and prepare well-supported, USPAP-compliant appraisal reports across a range of purposes.
\n \nThe position is particularly well suited to an established appraiser who wants to practice at a high level while working with novel technology and helping shape the next generation of art valuation infrastructure.
\n \nResponsibilities
\n- \n
- Research and value contemporary artworks for fair market value, replacement value, and other appropriate valuation purposes \n
- Prepare rigorous, USPAP-compliant appraisal reports for charitable contributions, estate and tax planning, insurance, lending, financial reporting, and other client needs \n
- Conduct in-depth research into artists, individual works, provenance, exhibition history, literature, and relevant markets \n
- Analyze auction results, gallery and private-market information, comparable sales, and broader market trends \n
- Develop and clearly articulate valuation methodologies and conclusions \n
- Work directly within Appraisal Bureau’s platform and utilize our technology-enabled and AI-supported appraisal workflows \n
- Collaborate with clients and the broader Appraisal Bureau team to establish appraisal scope and gather necessary documentation \n
- Manage multiple appraisal projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail \n
- Maintain complete research, comparable-sale, and valuation documentation within the Appraisal Bureau platform \n
- Stay current on contemporary art markets, artists, galleries, auction houses, and relevant market developments \n
- Contribute to the continued development of Appraisal Bureau’s appraisal methodologies, data, and technology-enabled workflows \n
Qualifications
\nProfessional fine-art appraisal experience and a strong working knowledge of contemporary art and its markets are required.
\n \nAccreditation or certification is required, particularly through the Appraisers Association of America (AAA). Accreditation or certification through the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) or American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will also be considered.
\n \nThe ideal candidate will also have:
\n \n- \n
- Current USPAP training and a strong understanding of professional appraisal standards \n
- Demonstrated experience valuing contemporary art \n
- Strong knowledge of the primary and secondary art markets \n
- Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills \n
- The ability to evaluate comparable sales and translate complex market information into defensible valuation conclusions \n
- Exceptional attention to detail and a high standard of professional judgment \n
- Strong organizational and project-management skills \n
- Comfort working independently while collaborating closely with a team \n
- Interest in technology and enthusiasm for incorporating new tools and AI-supported workflows into professional appraisal practice \n
- High standards of discretion and confidentiality when working with significant private collections and sensitive financial information \n
Location & Compensation
\n \nThe position is based in New York City, with a hybrid working arrangement. We are also open to a remote arrangement for an exceptional candidate with the appropriate appraisal experience and credentials.
\n \nBase salary is $80,000–$90,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The compensation package also includes equity options, medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, and generous PTO.
\n \nWhy Appraisal Bureau
\n \nThis is an opportunity to join a growing company transforming how art collections are managed and valued. Rather than working across disconnected databases, spreadsheets, research tools, and reports, our appraisers work within a purpose-built technology platform that leverages technology and AI to replace fragmented, legacy systems with modern infrastructure for art valuation.
\n \nYou will have the opportunity to work on significant contemporary art collections, collaborate with sophisticated collectors and institutions, and help define how professional appraisal practice evolves as better data, software, and AI become part of the field.
\n \nAppraisal Bureau is an equal opportunity employer.
