Position Overview Attorney – Assistant Public Defender I – Hampton (State Role Title: Legal Services Officer II, Hiring Range: $77,976.00 + State Benefits) The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) seeks an Assistant Public Defender to provide high‑quality legal advocacy for indigent clients, handling criminal cases for adults and juveniles across multiple court stages. The role reports to the Chief Public Defender of the Hampton office. Responsibilities Conduct client and witness interviews. Collaborate with staff investigators to investigate cases. File pretrial and post‑trial motions and litigate motions. Notice appropriate appealable issues. Represent clients in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts. Ensure timely visitation with clients in jail and maintain regular communication with clients, family members, and other approved parties. Prepare, edit, and review motions and briefs. Make sound legal arguments in courtroom settings. Work independently and collaboratively to meet court deadlines. Minimum Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to the Virginia State Bar, or registration to take the July 2026 Virginia Bar Exam. Active interest in indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice. Willingness to try cases and desire to improve as a trial attorney. Ability to learn and quickly internalize feedback. Strong time‑management skills with an ability to meet deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to multi‑task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to all courts and regional jails. Knowledge of criminal law and evidence. Additional Considerations Prior experience defending criminal cases is strongly considered. Applicants hired before obtaining Virginia bar licensure will be employed as Law Clerks at a starting salary of $65,158.00; upon licensure, the title and salary of Assistant Public Defender I are granted.
