About The Role The Medical Director of Kidney Transplant will serve in a key leadership role within the Division of Nephrology. The faculty physician will be responsible for delivering high-quality clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, while also advancing research, education, quality improvement, and advocacy initiatives in collaboration with the Division Chief and Center leadership. The role also ensures alignment of transplant practices with institutional standards and strategic goals, includes participation in on‑call and weekend coverage, active engagement in interdisciplinary meetings, and contribution to hospital‑wide quality improvement initiatives. Kids Are Our Everything Department: 10219 Nephrology Pay Range: $100,000.00 – $300,000.00 What You'll Bring Minimum Education Medical Doctor (M.D.) Medical degree from an accredited medical school (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise. Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care. Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team. Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Demonstrates a personal commitment to Continuing Medical Education and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty. Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. Previous experience managing a division, department, or program in an academic setting. Active participation in transplant candidate evaluation and selection committee meetings. Demonstrated Expertise In Management of pediatric patients with end‑stage renal disease. Pediatric transplant recipient and donor selection, including histocompatibility and tissue typing. Immediate and long‑term post‑operative management, including immunosuppressive therapy and its impact on growth and development. Recognition and management of allograft dysfunction and rejection, including biopsy interpretation and ancillary diagnostic testing. Long‑term outpatient management of pediatric kidney transplant recipients. Required Licenses And Certifications Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Hospital (Required) Board certified or Eligible for board certification in primary practice specialty (Required) Functional Accountabilities Clinical Leadership & Patient Care Provide expert care to pediatric kidney transplant patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Partner with the surgical transplant director to ensure integrated, coordinated care delivery. Oversee all medical aspects of the transplant process, including candidate evaluation, pre‑ and post‑transplant management, and long‑term follow‑up. Serve as attending nephrologist on the Heart & Kidney Unit. Participate in general pediatric nephrology on‑call coverage (including nights and weekends) as assigned by the Division of Nephrology, providing consultative support to inpatient and specialty services across the hospital. Provide leadership and oversight of the medical care team, ensuring high‑quality, patient‑centered care and effective coordination across providers. Promote continuity of care and collaboration with community medical providers through timely documentation, communication, and follow‑up. Actively engage in family‑centered care, maintaining professional and compassionate communication, and coordinate referrals to appropriate specialists and ancillary services as needed. Adequately and promptly complete all clinical documentation as required by JCAHO, other regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and Policies and Procedures including complete clinical charge documentation. Administrative & Strategic Leadership (30% of effort) Partner with administrative and nursing leadership to develop and execute strategic goals for the transplant program. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and hospital committees to align transplant initiatives with institutional priorities. Serve as the primary liaison with hospital administration, surgical colleagues, and external partners. Develop policies, procedures, and protocols that reflect best practices and evolving standards of care. Maintain accurate program records and oversee initiatives that advance the mission of the Division and Center. Assist the Division Chief and Center leadership in providing analytical data and reports necessary for the operation and administration of assigned area(s). Program Oversight, Regulatory Compliance, and Quality Ensure compliance with all institutional, federal, and regulatory requirements, including UNOS, CMS, and Joint Commission standards. Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives to optimize transplant outcomes and enhance program performance. Develop, implement, and monitor performance and quality metrics specific to the Kidney Transplant Program. Track patient and graft survival outcomes, benchmark performance against national standards, and drive continuous quality improvement efforts. Oversee accurate and timely data submission to UNOS and other governing agencies. Collaborate with hospital leadership to maintain accreditation, operational excellence, and adherence to best practices in all transplant‑related processes. Actively participate in divisional, departmental, and hospital‑wide quality and safety committees. Professionalism, Education and Mentorship Contribute to the education and training of fellows, residents, and medical students in pediatric nephrology and transplantation. Serve as a mentor to junior faculty and trainees, fostering professional growth and academic development. Develop and deliver educational curricula and training programs related to kidney transplantation. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and excellence‑driven culture within the transplant team. Research and Innovation Promote and participate in clinical and translational research within pediatric transplantation. Support data‑driven innovation and contribute to scholarly publications and presentations at national meetings.
