Long Term Substitute English Teacher - Cole Middle School Starting Date: Sep 25, 2026 Long-Term Substitute English Teacher. Approximate dates needed: 9/25/2026 - 12/1/2026. Job Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the School Principal, manage student behaviors by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures. Maintain discipline in accordance with school rules and disciplinary systems. Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies. Familiarity with deeper learning and high leverage instructional practices. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations and times. Plan a program of study that meets individual needs, interests, and abilities of students. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to maturity and interests. Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation when requested. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Guide learning toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, projects, and similar activities. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with location limitations and student needs. Implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals through instruction and action. Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required. Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation. Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life, develop reasonable classroom rules, and maintain order fairly. Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals and volunteers, evaluate performance cooperatively with department heads. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence. Attend staff meetings. Perform other duties deemed necessary by administration. Confere with parents when necessary. Assist in orientation of new faculty. Advise administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline. Takes an active role in interpreting school objectives to students, parents, and the community at large. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal. Qualifications Must possess current RI Teaching Certification: Middle Grades English Teacher, Grades 5-8 - Elementary Extension. Strong oral and written communication skills. Responsive to multiple needs of students and staff while maintaining sensitivity. Positive interaction with students, staff, and community; personable problem‑solving approach. Work collegially with all levels of administration and staff. Ability to prioritize needs and requests of students and staff, responding professionally and efficiently. Must successfully pass a BCI. At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
