Description Spring/Summer New Grads Program Overview The twelve‑month UNC Health Rex Nurse Residency program supports the transition from academia to practice for new graduate nurses. The program provides structured clinical and professional growth through classroom sessions, continuing education, professional development, and a group evidence‑based practice project. Program goals include: Increase proficiency from novice to competent nurse Promote evidence-based practice at the bedside to ensure best patient outcomes Develop clinical leadership skills at the point of care Eligibility New Graduate Nurse: Graduation from a school of professional nursing, licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care, and basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Definition of a new graduate nurse: Nursing student in final semester, nursing graduate within 12 months of graduation, or RN who has worked less than six months as a registered nurse. Department Description 6 East is a 31‑bed Med‑Surg Flex Unit specializing in medical patients and surgical overflow. Shift schedule is 12‑hour shifts (7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m.). Weekend requirement: four weekend shifts in a six‑week schedule. Patient ratio: 1 RN : 5‑6 patients; 1 CNA/CST : 10‑11 patients. Responsibilities Education – Identify and meet learning needs; attend education programs; use patient education materials. Evaluation of Care – Identify expected outcomes; participate in interdisciplinary discussion; communicate for continuity of care. Implementation – Demonstrate competence in caring for complex patients; perform bedside testing; utilize standards, policies, and procedures; consult resources timely. Leadership – Develop goals for professional growth; collaborate on unit goals; promote cost‑effective care; maintain safe environment. Patient Assessment – Prioritize care and synthesize data; anticipate discharge needs; build relationships with families. Planning – Coordinate with patient/family to develop care plans; address cultural and ethnic issues; prioritize tasks. Research – Review relevant journals; bring ideas to staff for practice applicability. Education Requirements Graduation from a school of professional nursing. If hired after January 6 , 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing within seven years of employment date. Licensure/Certification Requirements Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification. Professional Experience Requirements No prior experience required.
