Emergency Technician
An Emergency Technician performs various duties to assist the Registered Nurse, Physicians and other Hospital personnel with the provision of patient care in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Technician services performed are only performed in the Hospitals Emergency Department; or, while moving a patient between the Emergency Department and another part of the Hospital. The Emergency Technician services are performed under the direction and supervision of one of the following: A Physician, A Physician Assistant designated by a Physician, A Registered Nurse designated by a Physician. The Emergency Technician may perform skills that are approved by and verified by their training.
Responsibilities include:
- Airway Management: Opens and maintains an airway; oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal adjunct. Performs oral, nasal, and ET suctioning. Applies a pulse oximeter and documents results. Initiates oxygen therapy via nasal canula, masks, and bag-valve mask.
- Cardiac Management: Participates in a Code Blue, Pediatric Code Blue, and Code Pink. Defibrillation via the cardiac monitor/automated external defibrillator (AED). Initiates cardiac monitoring, obtains rhythm strips, and notifies the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes. Obtains a 12 lead EKG. Assists the Registered Nurse with triage of patients. Obtains and records vital signs. Performs phlebotomy. Initiates intravenous (IV) saline locks, installation of normal saline (NS), and removes IV catheters. Insertion of an intraosseous needle. Collects specimens according to established policies and procedures. Arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate. Insertion and removal of Foley catheters, and performs bladder scans. Applies cervical immobilization device (CID), backboard, orthopedic appliances and simple splints. Sizes crutches and teaches crutch walking. Assists with equipment set-up, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc. Assists with restraint and seclusion of patients and application of restraint devices. Provides direct observation of patients when companion care is ordered. Assists with transport of patient throughout the hospital. Assists with sterile procedures and adheres to sterile technique, universal precautions, and handling of hazardous materials. Performs point of care testing including bedside blood glucose. Initiation and maintenance of isolation precautions. Documents care provided in the patients electronic medical record. Clerical duties including answering of phones, paging physicians, and arranging transports as needed. Cleans equipment, patient rooms, utility rooms, and stock rooms. Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and code of conduct. Demonstrates, creates, and fosters a work environment that is consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Aultman Health Foundation and provides care that consistently complies with the Aultman Corporate Service Standards and high reliability culture. Manages time wisely and seeks assignments when duties are completed. Represents the hospital by volunteering for community activities which may include participation at community events, activities or on local boards. Seeks opportunities for involvement and participates in hospital based committees. Other duties as assigned.
Job requirements include:
- Completion of an accredited EMS-Paramedic training program.
- Current certificate to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Ohio.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
- Subject to background check and fingerprinting.
Working conditions include:
- Working hours vary according to departmental need; includes days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays; overtime based on a 40 hour work week.
- Works under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
- Sitting/standing/moving about during working hours.
- Hazardous Exposure Category I tasks that involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues.
