Senior SMT Engineer

ModRetro Inc.

Support the development, installation, and qualification of new in-house SMT lines, including equipment selection, line layout, bring-up, and buyoff.

Own the ongoing maintenance, uptime, and performance of SMT line equipment, including solder paste printing, pick-and-place, reflow, and inspection systems.

Program, optimize, and maintain Mycronic, Fuji, and Heller platforms, including placement programs, print parameters, and reflow profiles for new products and changeovers.

Establish and execute preventive maintenance schedules, calibration programs, and spare parts strategies to maximize line availability.

Drive line performance metrics including OEE, first-pass yield, DPMO, changeover time, and throughput, and lead continuous improvement initiatives against them.

Lead root-cause analysis of SMT process defects (e.g., bridging, tombstoning, voiding, insufficient solder) using SPI, AOI, and X-ray data.

Develop SOPs, work instructions, and training programs for SMT operators and technicians.

Collaborate with electrical engineering and PCB design teams to provide DFA feedback and improve manufacturability.

Manage SMT material handling practices, including solder paste control, MSD handling, and feeder management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent years of experience.

8+ years of SMT process or equipment engineering experience in electronics manufacturing.

Hands-on operational experience with Mycronic, Heller, Fuji or similar SMT equipment, including programming, changeover, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Experience supporting SMT line installation, bring-up, and qualification.

Strong understanding of SMT processes end to end: solder paste printing, component placement, reflow profiling, and inline inspection (SPI/AOI).

Working knowledge of IPC standards, including IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001.

Demonstrated ability to develop preventive maintenance programs and troubleshoot complex electromechanical equipment.

Experience driving yield, defect, and uptime improvements using structured root-cause methodologies.

Ability to travel domestically, including to equipment vendors and additional manufacturing sites.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Vendor training or certification on SMT platforms.

Experience with greenfield SMT line installation, including facility requirements such as power, compressed air, nitrogen, and ventilation.

Experience in high-mix or low-to-mid-to-high volume consumer electronics manufacturing environments.

Familiarity with MES integration, component-level traceability, and data-driven process control (SPC).

Experience with downstream processes such as X-ray inspection, selective solder, conformal coating, press-fit, or box-build assembly.

Six Sigma or similar quality/process certification.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

You know your equipment inside and out, equally comfortable writing a placement program, tuning a reflow profile, or tearing down a placement head.

You turn SPI, AOI, and yield data into concrete process improvements rather than letting it sit in reports.

You thrive in a fast-paced, small-team environment, learning quickly and iterating with impact.
