This position is in the Facilities Service Line, VA Medical Center in Tomah, Wisconsin, a complexity level 3 Facility (676). The primary purpose ofthis position is to perform transportation of patients and medical materials.

Major duties:

• Operate passenger buses with a minimum capacity of 16 passengers, equipped with air brakes and hydraulic lifts used to load wheelchair passengers.
• Operates dump truck

• Adheres to all roadway laws. In addition to taking into consideration such factors as the clearance of underpasses, overhead power lines, weight limitations, and highway restrictions, the driver must have alternate bypass routes established in case of emergency situations. The driver is also responsible to ensure that buses do not contain more passengers than legally allowed.
• Performs infection control practices on equipment and vehicles.
• Keep accurate records used in accounting the operations of the transportation unit.
• Interpret and follow manuals on operating equipment and maintenance schedule.
• Performs administrative duties associated with various trips taken to ensure proper data collection.
• Use reference materials and manufacturers' specifications to operate motorized equipment safely and properly.
• Knowledge about which routes may be legally driven and the overpass clearances and I other restrictions on such routes. This includes having knowledge of safe braking distances based on the size of the bus and the added weight of the passengers.
• Operates all accessory equipment on vehicles used to safely transport patients, such equipment as hydraulic wheelchair lifts, portable cots with securing devices, movable steps, wheelchair locks, and restraints.
• Observe any safety procedures. Must be able to ascertain what protective devices or clothing will be needed on the various jobs to maintain safe working conditions.
• Correct operation and transport of equipment at all times. Ability to understand specifications and limitations of equipment for safe use.
• Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:00pm; Subject to shift changes, weekends, and Holiday work as needed.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Drivers operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent) and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Incumbent will exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 18 kilograms ( 40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Greater physical effort is needed to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles. Patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
