Key Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room using physician preference cards and open instruments and supplies utilizing sterile technique
• Perform the surgical scrub prior to patient entry and assist the physician in draping the patient to establish the operative field
• Provide instruments, supplies, and special equipment as needed during surgery, and recognize and correct breaks in sterile technique
• Preserve and ensure correct identification of operative specimens for laboratory analysis
• Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as directed by the circulating nurse
• Clean and sterilize contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies; may also perform clerical and technical direct patient care activities if assigned to Labor and Delivery

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school or program for Surgical Technicians
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire
• Knowledge of basic human anatomy and basic first-aid methods and practices
• Ability to assess and provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Experience working in an operating room or surgical setting
• Familiarity with electrosurgical machines and diagnostic lighting equipment
• Experience or exposure to Labor and Delivery unit procedures and workflows
