Site Description The Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school that serves incarcerated men and women aged 18‑22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice‑involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing. Position Overview The English Teacher will support instructional services provided to scholars within a secure facility. In one class period, the English Teacher will support adult scholars taking multiple courses—including accelerated offerings—across the following content areas: Reading/RLA, English I, English II, English III, and English IV. The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet adult scholars’ needs. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Instructional Delivery _

Facilitate multi‑grade, multi‑content coursework for groups of multi‑aged scholars in each classroom or on their units. Ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons. Adapt lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels of scholars. _ Classroom Management _ Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support the academic and behavioral growth of scholars. _ Collaboration, Support, and Guidance _ Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well‑rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements. _ Compliance and Reporting _ Ensure high‑quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines. Other Duties as Assigned Tasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required) Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment) Experience working with opportunity or justice‑involved youth (preferred) The Touchstone At the Maya Angelou Schools, the key to our success is rooted in building trusting, respectful and nurturing relationships with each other.
