Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography)

Summary Position in the Computed Tomography - Imaging section of the Radiology Service at the Atlanta VA Health Care System. Utilizes cross‑sectional anatomy in spiral and multi‑slice CT, 3‑D reconstruction, drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular exams. Judges image acceptability for diagnostic use and emphasizes relevant aspects to physicians. Qualifications United States citizenship; non‑citizens only when no qualified citizens are available per VA policy. Certified in general radiologic technology by ARRT (R); advanced ARRT certification required for CT, MRI, or mammography duties performed independently. Advanced certification indicates independent operation and proven clinical competency in the specialty. Full‑time training of at least 24 months or equivalent, evidenced by an associate degree or certificate accredited by JRCERT or another DOE‑recognised agency. Grandfathering provisions apply as specified. Proficient in spoken and written English per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Minimum one year of experience at the next lower grade level directly related to the position. Preferred: 1–5 years of CT experience and CT registry. Physical requirements per VA Directive 5019. Responsibilities / Duties Perform independent head and body CT scans, including CT angiography and cardiac studies. Explain exams to patients, ensuring understanding of procedures and potential hazards. Conduct daily calibrations on the CT scanner and determine technical factors such as positioning, scan number, and thickness. Maintain scheduling flexibility for critically ill and emergency patients. Store and retrieve scans on optical disk or archive systems; transport lab work with proper documentation. Assist the radiologist/supervisor with developing and updating protocols to maintain state‑of‑the‑art technology. Administer IV injections using sterile techniques. Participate in radiologic procedures requiring operating‑room sterile protocols (scrub‑in). Manage work schedule: weekend shifts (8:00 pm–8:00 am), Tuesday & Wednesday (7:00 am–3:30 pm), subject to change. Adhere to health and safety procedures, including basic first aid, life support, aseptic techniques, IV methods, and universal precautions. Schedule & Compensation Work schedule includes weekends (8:00 pm–8:00 am), Tuesday & Wednesday (7:00 am–3:30 pm), and is subject to change. Salary is competitive with regular increases; a higher step rate may be warranted for exceptional qualifications. PTO: 37–50 days annually (13–26 days leave, 13 days sick, 11 federal holidays).
