An Assistant Director of Nursing, or ADON, manages the nursing team in a hospital, long-term care facility or other healthcare institution. They hire and train staff, create schedules and conduct employee evaluations. To qualify for this position, you must be a Registered Nurse in the city of Chicago.

 

Assistant Director of Nursing duties and responsibilities

The main responsibility of an Assistant Director of Nursing is to ensure that the institution they work for delivers the highest possible level of patient care and adheres to regulations and best practices regarding sanitation, infection control and patient privacy. Some key Assistant Director of Nursing job duties include:

 

• Hiring new nurses and overseeing the onboarding process by training them or assigning them to a trainer

   

• Creating schedules to ensure that departments have adequate nursing coverage for every shift

   

• Coaching nurses to improve performance and handling discipline issues

   

• Monitoring expenses to ensure that the facility operates within budgetary constraints

   

• Holding staff meetings to discuss patient status

   

• Conducting employee evaluations that identify nurses’ strengths and areas of improvement

   

• Making rounds to assess patient status and observe nurses

   

• Checking patient records to ensure that they are accurate and up to date
