Buyer/Planner

Job Title

Responsible for assigned commodities to manage with corporate direction. Responsibilities include: supplier development (selection, relationship management, pricing), cost management (negotiation, savings, analysis, payment terms), supplier agreements, tooling development, product approvals and commodity tracking. Also, responsible for providing all costs, lead time, and capital expenditures related to assigned customer quotes and bids. Ability to estimate required data for a customer quote if supplier or internal manufacturing data are not available.

Essential Functions

• Develop and manage a global supply base for assigned commodity
• Cost Management
  • Supplier negotiations (cost, capital, agreements or commercially related)
  • Cost savings – identify cost savings opportunities through negotiations, tooling, automation, resourcing, Value Analysis Value Engineering, etc.
  • Capital investment – identify and request capital investments needed to support and grow the business
• New product commercialization, tooling development and sample approvals for assigned commodity
• Produce, maintain, and utilize various reports for commodity management Estimator
• Key cross-functional team member working to develop customer quote proposals
• Maintain an in-depth knowledge of company’s global supply base, commodities and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to understand general specifications from engineering drawings
• Manage supplier quotations for new and existing products
• Calculate total cost of ownership (TCO) for products
• Perform cost and lead time analysis to meet customer expectations
• Communicate and review quoting threshold data with upper management
• Support as required with new item creation (Bills of Material (BOM’s), production routers, etc…)
• Maintain knowledge of company’s selling process, assigned customer’s requirements/expectations

Secondary Functions

• Provide prompt and accurate service to Sales, Project Management, Marketing, and Product Development departments as required
• Generate and maintain reports as required
• Other duties as assigned

Performance Measures

• Customer quotes – complete quotes on-time. Ensure all information is accurate. Facilitate awarded business with key functional departments to ensure smooth and efficient transactions.
• Cost management – meet or exceed cost down goals while minimizing inflation
• Bid management – research, obtain, and maintain all sourcing aspects for customer bids including recommending risk factors such as raw material or currency to protect margins for the duration of the bid award.
• Supplier Quality – support the quality team and initiatives. Coordinate all quality issues with the supply base.
• Commodity project management – manage assigned projects to ensure all key metrics are met (timing, costs, quality, etc.).
• Supplier rationalization – review supply base for consolidation considerations.
• Establish and maintain relationships with key suppliers.
