Building Engineer (GP) Job ID: 16790 | Location: Grande Park Elementary School Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Compensation: $21.95 per hour plus benefits (includes a mandatory 4.5% retirement contribution to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund) Union Membership: Oswego Custodial/Maintenance Association Qualifications Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of assigned tasks Demonstrated supervisory, maintenance, and cleaning skills Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds Ability to work flexible hours as needed Strong work habits Leads by example Experience with mechanical systems preferred General Description The Building Engineer is an important member of the building staff, responsible for ensuring the interior and exterior of the building is neat, safe, and attractive. The Engineer works closely with custodial staff to plan and organize work that minimizes interruptions while responding to emergencies immediately. Specific Responsibilities Supervises custodial and maintenance staff, trains them in cleaning and maintenance methods, and evaluates performance. Monitors time records and certifies time cards for wage payments. Wears uniform while school is in session and ensures custodians do the same. Ensures the building is opened, secured, and that the Engineer remains on campus during the workday. Inspects and supervises maintenance of grounds, trees, bushes, entrances, parking lots, tennis courts, and baseball/football fields, performing yard‑keeping tasks as needed. Performs general cleaning duties such as dust‑mopping, wet‑mopping floors, etc. Maintains grounds free of rubbish, litter, snow, and ice. Conducts ongoing maintenance checks on boilers, pumps, equipment, and air‑conditioning systems, making minor repairs and changing light bulbs as needed. Reports major repairs and any damage to school property promptly to the building principal. Provides for the emergency replacement of broken windows. Assumes responsibility for fire safety. Conducts monthly walkthroughs to document building condition. Communicates daily with the building principal and custodians regarding activities, problems, time off, vacation days, etc. Uses the Custodial Procedures Manual as the standard for upkeep. Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and prepares requisitions as needed. Keeps ongoing records, schedules, and documentation of supplies, maintenance, and activities. Complies with local laws and procedures for trash, rubbish, and waste disposal. Schedules completion of work orders with the building principal. Collaborates with the Director of Operations on programs, training, supplies, and work orders. Understands that schedules and programs can change at any time by approval of the principal or Director of Operations.
