Position: Physical Therapist II (Outpatient) Location: Winthrop, MA; Schedule: 40 hours per week. Position Summary Reporting to the Rehabilitation Therapies Supervisor/Manager, the level 2 Physical Therapist conducts comprehensive assessments of in‑and outpatients with physical and functional deficits. The PT plans and implements individual and group physical therapy treatments to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, prevent permanent disability, and restore independence using various treatment techniques. The PT collaborates with other disciplines to arrange for appropriate follow‑up care and facilitates a successful return to home and work environments. The PT also provides student training according to departmental guidelines and participates in continuous education. Minimum 3 years’ experience as a licensed physical therapist is required; preferred 1 year experience at BMC. Job Responsibilities Conduct physical therapy evaluation procedures according to professional and departmental guidelines. Respond to all consults in assigned area within 24 hours; complete evaluation and documentation within 24 hours of consult. Review patient records, gather necessary information, and obtain a physician’s order prior to assessing the patient. Select evaluation procedures that reflect understanding of the patient’s diagnosis, abilities, and limitations. Administer evaluation procedures according to the guidelines of standardized tests, adapting procedures as indicated to accommodate the specific needs of patients. Interpret evaluation results, develop an integrated diagnostic impression, and make recommendations. Perform re‑evaluations according to departmental policies, changes in patient’s status, or response to treatment. Educate patient and caregiver regarding evaluation findings and management of care recommendations. Establish treatment goals and plans that reflect the needs of patients while meeting departmental, institutional, and third‑party reimbursement requirements. Formulate treatment goals and plans that reflect the patient’s unique psychological and functional deficits. Establish measurable and attainable short‑ and long‑term goals in collaboration with patient and/or caregiver. Modify goals as warranted by changes in patient’s status. Assess discharge needs of the patient and caregiver, including insurance issues, equipment needs, follow‑up appointments, and appropriate use of community services. Communicate patient care and discharge needs to team members as needed and arrange for appropriate follow‑up. Implement comprehensive individual and group treatment, demonstrating clinical competence, establishing priorities based on evaluation results, and using creative treatment approaches. Demonstrate clinical problem‑solving skills with a variety of patient problems and substantiate actions taken. Progress patient treatment programs appropriately and terminate them as warranted by patient’s progress and condition. Recommend and/or issue appropriate assistive devices or durable medical equipment, ensuring that it properly fits the patient. Develop and instruct patient and caregiver in home programs and/or use of recommended equipment; provide verbal and/or written instructions as indicated. Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with all patients, engaging them in treatment, providing reinforcement and support, and setting limits appropriately. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups regularly served, notifying supervisor when patients in other age groups are present. Adhere to diagnosis‑related precautions, demonstrating good judgment in handling potentially hazardous situations. Assign appropriate patients to Physical Therapist Assistant and Rehabilitation and/or Co‑op Aide, seeking feedback. Monitor clinical supplies on assigned floors, requesting replacements in a timely manner. Comply with departmental, institutional, and accrediting agency policies and standards, completing area‑specific documentation with accuracy and timeliness. Issue supplies/adaptive equipment in a cost‑effective manner, justifying issuance and demonstrating actual use by patient. Complete patient care charges accurately and meet area‑specific productivity standards at least 95% of the time, identifying problems and making adjustments to meet targets. Participate in the peer review process, completing forms thoroughly, providing constructive feedback, and fostering learning experiences for peers. Complete mandatory requirements (including PPD, competencies, safety/infection control tests, CPR, license renewal) within the given time frame. Show evidence of ongoingprofessional growth and knowledge of regulations and standards, initiating independent learning opportunities, seeking and integrating new information into daily practice. Stay current with advances in physical therapy treatments and techniques through attendance of professional meetings, continuing education, and literature review. Show knowledge of professional federal and state rules and regulations governing the practice of physical therapy. Assume responsibility and accountability for the care of patients being treated by the physical therapist assistant, directing and supervising the rehabilitation and/or coop aide safely and effectively. Contribute to the development and evaluation of physical therapy programs, communicating needs to senior therapists and supervisors. Assist in developing and achieving area goals, collecting data for research projects, clinical outcome studies, and departmental quality improvement projects. Collaborate with colleagues and other professionals to provide high‑quality patient care, serving as a clinical resource on assigned floors. Work as part of the rehabilitation therapy team, supporting staff members, listening for feedback, sharing knowledge positively, and expressing opinions clearly. Accommodate change, remain adaptable, maintain a professional demeanor during stress, and assume a leadership role in difficult situations. Attend and participate in all mandatory department meetings, arrive prepared and on time, and accept additional assignments as requested. Provide at least one evidence‑based area in‑service annually and prepare for verbal presentations using peer‑reviewed journals. Participate responsibly in the supervisory process, following through on suggestions and recommendations, utilizing supervision time for professional growth. Develop and meet annual goals with high performance quality, engage with management on departmental initiatives, and complete tasks under guidance. Monitor area equipment and supplies, ensuring even distribution and accountability. Orient medical professional staff and the community to physical therapy, supervise physical therapy students, and provide training in patient evaluation and treatment as practiced on assigned units. Facilitate development of clinical problem‑solving skills of affiliated students, schedule weekly meetings, and provide feedback. Track student performance, maintain communication with student program coordinator, and conduct performance evaluations. Utilize the hospital’s values as the basis for decision‑making, facilitate the hospital’s mission, and follow infection control and safety procedures. Show initiative with above duties minimal prompting from manager while accumulating/maintaining points required for level2 title. Job Requirements Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate (or equivalent) in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution; Doctorate preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current Massachusetts Commonwealth license; current CPR certification; APTA and MCAPTA membership preferred. Experience: 3 years as a licensed PT, 1 year at BMC preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and health‑care team; analytical abilities to evaluate patients’ condition, capabilities, and progress; ability to develop appropriate treatment programs. Compensation and Benefits Compensation Range: $37.50–$54.33 per hour based on qualifications. Pay determination considers education, experience, skills, certifications, organizational needs, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
