Automation Engineer

Job Title Automation Engineer Location Framingham, MA Job Summary This position is responsible for providing automation expertise for small‑to‑medium projects, including continuous improvement, retrofit, and large capital investments to optimize manufacturing and supporting operations. It involves designing, architecting, troubleshooting, and delivering future enhancements for automation‑related systems. The Engineer will design innovative solutions spanning automation systems, data historians, IoT devices, and will maintain technical support and system availability across multiple manufacturing facilities. Main Responsibilities Providing leadership and direction to junior team members while embodying the principles of the Sanofi Global Leadership Model Leading automation related projects Managing contractors for staff augmentation or project roles Ensuring timely issue escalation to senior management and cross‑functional support teams Partnering with support teams (Manufacturing, Quality, etc.) to ensure deliverables are completed to meet production schedules Mentoring junior automation engineers to ensure that the team applies compliant, efficient solutions to projects Automation Provide technical solutions to a wide range of process automation design challenges; solutions are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organization objectives Ensure process equipment automation is available to support operations schedule requirements Manage medium‑to‑large departmental projects and ensure that the appropriate controls, approvals, and validation requirements are implemented Integrate systems and data from a variety of skidded systems, analytical equipment, and process/building control systems Develop robust solutions that have minimal downtime and ensure data integrity Lead development of automation standards Training / Deviations / Compliance / Safety Comply with Sanofi requirements for training Ensure inspection readiness of assigned areas Oversee completion of investigations and deviations Ensure all assigned deviations and CAPAs are closed in a timely manner Ensure automation documentation is compliant and inspection ready Participate in inspections conducted by external regulators Comply with requirements from Genzymes Safety Program including health and safety regulations and OSHA requirements Continuous Improvement Work collaboratively with inter‑department and cross‑functional teams to lead necessary changes in a timely and productive manner Partner with Manufacturing to troubleshoot and drive resolution of process issues and proactively drive projects to improve manufacturing process Partner with Operational Excellence to drive process improvements through Kaizens, Kanban, 5S, and VSM Leadership Qualifications This position does not have any direct reports but might have direct reports of more junior engineers in the future Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science or any technological field and 5+ years of experience OR Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience Hands‑on programming experience with real‑time manufacturing automation and control systems (e.g., DeltaV, PLCs, PI, Werum PAS‑X, etc.) Hands‑on technical experience with troubleshooting and root cause analysis for manufacturing control systems, specifically DeltaV Hands‑on technical experience with providing support for automated manufacturing operations, specifically DeltaV Demonstrated knowledge of bus technologies and instrumentation Demonstrated knowledge of validation requirements for control systems in CGMP and/or ASTM environments Experience with multiple computerized systems (Ignition, Werum PAS‑X, PI, etc.) Experience with SCADA/PLC systems such as Rockwell Factory Talk/RSLogix, Honeywell Understanding of network infrastructure Experience with systems/network/validation, preferable in the chemical, pharmaceutical, foods, or other process industries Experience in establishment of safe practices in a cGMP environment Proficient working with computer programs/applications such as Windows, VBA, MS Office applications, etc. Proven technical and analytical skills to quickly resolve automation system issues Experience delivering solutions based on Digital 4.0 Experience with SaaS solutions Experience with IoT solutions and edge devices Special Working Conditions Required manufacturing operations support on a rotating on‑call 24/7 basis Requires working in an industrial manufacturing environment including gowning Benefits Enjoy a thoughtful, well‑crafted rewards package that recognizes your contribution and amplifies your impact Take good care of yourself and your family, with a wide range of health and well‑being benefits including high‑quality healthcare, prevention and wellness programs and at least 14 weeks gender‑neutral parental leave Sanofi Inc. and its U.S. affiliates are Equal Opportunity and Affiliated Employer.
