Custodial Supervisor Location: Creek Valley Elementary School | Status: Exempt | Schedule: 40 Hours/Week (MF), 12 months position
Position Summary: The Custodial Supervisor is responsible for assisting in providing leadership and supervision to custodial employees, reporting district energy use, managing health and safety, and assisting the Director of Buildings and Grounds as needed to ensure the efficient functioning and operation of district facilities and that a safe, clean and attractive environment exists for students, employees and the community.
Purpose of Position: The Custodial Supervisor is responsible for assisting in providing leadership and supervision to custodial employees, reporting district energy use, managing health and safety, and assisting the Director of Buildings and Grounds as needed to ensure the efficient functioning and operation of district facilities and that a safe, clean and attractive environment exists for students, employees and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as the district's Health and Safety Coordinator by developing, implementing and managing the district health and safety program, employee right to know, OSHA and other compliance programs.
- Ensures compliance with laws and school board policies.
- Serves as a district contact person for questions from employees, parents, students, and the community regarding health, safety, indoor air quality, and accommodations issues with district facilities.
- Implements, monitors, and ensures compliance with environmental laws and regulations (e.g. infectious waste disposal, radon testing and paint testing).
- Oversees and makes recommendations regarding the health and safety budget.
- Assists in development and implementation work methods and procedures for all building and grounds employees in order to maintain a cleaner, healthier, safer and more efficient environment.
- Assists in establishment of annual goals and objectives and evaluates department effectiveness.
- Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the cleaning of school facilities and grounds.
- Assists in development and implementation of a schedule of repairs and preventative maintenance for district facilities and department equipment.
- Inspects regularly district properties to assure they are operating properly, efficiently, safely and within established state and municipal laws.
- Researches, tests and implements the use of new products and equipment to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of custodial and maintenance procedures.
- Develops, implements and manages a resource conservation program (e.g. electrical, natural gas, water conservation, recycling, reuse).
- Assists in the development and delivery of reports and handbooks required by supervisors, state and federal agencies, and the district (e.g. health and safety, emergency planning, safety handbook, custodial employee handbook).
- Assists in representing the district at local and state meetings and in the buildings and grounds community.
- Provides supervision for the buildings and grounds employees. Recruits and interviews job candidates. Recommends candidates for employment, employee's continuation of employment, employee promotion, and employee discipline as appropriate. Assists in developing and aligning employee development opportunities and induction that adheres to laws and district mission. Participates in employee evaluation and coaching.
- Assists in setting and helping employees meet growth goals. Completes and records observations and conference with employees and communicates the results to them. Establishes and administers work schedules and procedures for custodial care of buildings and grounds to insure proper coverage for district activities
- Maintains the health and safety budget; assists in the maintenance of department budget for operations and capital and alternative facilities. Contacts vendors; obtains bids as required; purchases materials, supplies, services; and approves payments. Develops specifications for new purchases of equipment, materials, and services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Post-secondary education emphasizing on Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Certified Safety Professional or equivalent preparation related to the responsibilities of the position.
At least five years of experience in a related area.
Minnesota Chief "C" boilers license.
Knowledge of federal and state laws (e.g. health and safety, OSHA, alternative facilities, hazardous materials).
Knowledge of energy conservation methods and techniques.
Knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques.
Evidence of technological proficiency.
Ability to work independently and delegate work appropriately.
Excellent organization, time management, financial and technical skills.
Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with employees, visitors, and outside providers.
Ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources.
Sufficient writing and verbal skills to justify recommendations, create reports, and convey messages clearly.
Ability to compute numbers and formulas to estimate and maintaining a budget.
Ability to operate district vehicles, bobcat, and lawn equipment.
Knowledge of proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with state and federal laws.
Knowledge of and ability to follow safety precautions and use protective gear.
Ability to follow laws and district policies.
Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of TIES system.
Previous supervision experience.
Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Certified Safety Professional.
Certified pool and spa operation license.
Additional Information:
Must be willing and able to work in the following conditions: dusty, wet, cold, hot, high humidity, noisy, indoors, outdoors, on ladders, in small spaces, on roof tops, and on aerial work platforms.
Must be able to sit at a desk and process paperwork or operate a computer for extended periods of time.
Regularly work with chemicals requiring personal protective equipment.
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly, 75 pounds occasionally and over 75 pounds with team lifts.
Ability to perform to following actions continuously: walking, twisting and turning, stooping and bending, gripping, working with arms over one's head, climbing ladders, using hands dexterously, talking, hearing, and working at heights.
Schedule is flexible; hours may vary seasonally.
