Have prior successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports). The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions. Report to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. Advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. Demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment. Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. General Responsibilities The success of athletic programs strongly influences community image. Public exposure is considerable responsibility, and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health must not be overridden. The position includes extended time, risk of injury, and due‑process predicaments. The coach must exercise common sense and good judgment when duties are not specifically covered. Administrative Duties Assist the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events. Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices, adhere to scheduled facility times, and coordinate the program with maintenance and school employees. Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes. Staff Responsibilities Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth through clinic attendance. Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants. Maintain discipline, address grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation. Perform any other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal. Student Responsibilities Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant at all practices, games, and while traveling. Provide training rules and any unique regulations of the sport to each athlete. Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours. Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process, and cooperate with parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assist athletes in selecting college or advanced educational opportunities. Finance and Equipment Participate in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season and recommend equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, or technical specifications. Operate within budget appropriations and be accountable for all equipment, collecting the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment; submit annual inventory and current records. Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing who may enter, issue, or requisition equipment. Permit athletes only to be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times. Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, check general cleanliness of the facility, and be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty. Instill in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use. Public Relations Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings. Promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program and promote the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or any other feasible manner. Be responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media. Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
