Job Summary To provide the recent Pharmacy graduate with an interim position while preparing for Board examinations and licensure. During this period, the graduate will be trained as a staff pharmacist with all duties; however, a licensed pharmacist will provide oversight and final review of any orders.
Under the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law, policy, and standard procedures dispenses and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Compounds sterile and non-sterile products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines (ADMs); provides basic trouble shooting of ADMs; pre-packs both hazardous and non-hazardous medications; enters charges and credits into computer, makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IVs. As the Pharmacy Intern progresses through their college education, they will be provided the opportunity to participate in clinical monitoring and initiatives, under the supervision of a pharmacist. Example activities include renal dosage adjustment, pharmacokinetic dosing, IV to oral conversion, medication reconciliation, and attending patient rounds. Responsibilities Core Duties

- Interprets physician's orders accurately.
- Consults with practitioners and professional staff as needed to clarify or ensure positive therapeutic outcomes and to minimize drug related problems/errors.
- Labels and dispenses drugs accurately and completely and in a timely manner.
- Reviews patient profiles for any interactions based on diagnosis, allergies or duplications via order entry and appropriately responds to electronic alerts.
- Demonstrates appropriate sterile aseptic technique, order of mixing, use of compounding equipment and other pharmaceutical preparation practices.
- Ensures dosing is appropriate for patient's weight and age. - Maintains, monitors and reports adverse drug reactions.
- Completes medication orders for delivery to nursing units in a timely fashion. - Utilizes therapeutic substation protocols and promotes rational, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives.
- Effectively organizes and prioritizes work and ensures timely and effective department operation.
- Demonstrates the ability to make critical decisions in a timely manner.
- Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule. - Demonstrates basic knowledge of the automated dispensing machines (ADM) technology.
- Assists in maintaining proper inventory levels.
- Ensures that controlled substances and corresponding records are handled appropriately.
- Maintains positive professional communications and attitudes with hospital staff.
- Answers phone in courteous and professional manner. - Attends pharmacy staff meetings and in-services.
- Reconciles and restocks emergency cart drugs and other floor stock-type systems in a timely fashion.
- Reports unusual occurrences to management and completes appropriate paperwork.
- Maintains Quality Initiatives as required.
ExpertiseActively learns and demonstrates expertise in the pharmacy intern role by staying abreast of departmental practices and policies, but consistently performing within the pharmacy practice act, and by displaying a consistent understanding of all required duties and the timeline for their completion. Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including the automatic dispensing machines, the pharmacy information system, the controlled substances safes, and the medications pre-packager. Maintains IV competency. Compounds sterile IV preparations per USP 797 and 800 guidelines. Follows all policies and procedures for sterile compounding. As the Pharmacy Intern reaches their third and fourth years of their college program, in addition to the duties listed above, begins to participate in clinical monitoring, medication reconciliation and patient rounds. A pharmacist must verify any activity that a pharmacy intern performs. Participates in additional departmental projects as available. Customer ServiceActively learns and performs job duties in a manner to consistently improve the patient experience. Assists the nursing staff with coordinating medication therapy to meet individual needs. Contributes to the efficient availability of the right medication at the right time for our patients. Demonstrates organizational skills and plans ahead. Exhibits effective problem-solving skills in dealing with customer needs. Minimizes error in dose calculations, labeling, and dispensing. FlexibilityAble to respond to emergent situations in an effective manner. Uses time to departmental advantage to ensure efficiency in completion of assigned tasks. Avoids non-productive activities during work time. Demonstrates flexibility required to meet changing priorities. RespectMaintains respectful working relationships with co-workers and encourages the team approach. Treats others professionally and courteously. Engages in a teamwork approach where honesty and cooperation are an everyday occurrence. Offers positive feedback to coworkers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Light Work: frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds with a maximum lifting of 25 pounds.
Training in proficiency of age-specific therapies for ages served by the pharmacy, which include neo-natals, infants, juveniles, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Shifts and Hours Will Vary
Heavy Work: Lift 25 pounds manually frequently, >25 pounds lift with assistance and push 150 pounds on wheels.On-the-job training will be provided. Education
