Position: Organizer (Limited Duration 24-Month Position with possibility of renewal)
Location: Los Angeles, CA. This assignment will require working remotely, from the union office, and considerable travel throughout the region and occasional travel around the state.
Salary Range: $78,000 – $84,000 (depending on qualifications and experience), plus full employee fringe benefit package: health, dental and vision plans. 15 days of paid vacation, sick leave and paid holidays.

Background Information:
AFT 1521 is a progressive union representing over 4,000 full-time and adjunct faculty on all nine campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).
Given the nation-wide attack on public education and unions, and the continuing challenges of organizing and activating members, AFT Local 1521 (the Los Angeles College “Faculty Guild”) is hiring a new Organizer . The Organizer works with the Organizing Director, member leaders, and student interns to grow organizational capacity. The Organizer position is housed within our Organizing Department which builds member power to win campaigns, advance union priorities, and cultivate a culture that values organizing and member engagement.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the Organizer is to strengthen and grow member organizing teams on every campus. The Organizer will:
- Work with the Organizing Director and member leadership to implement campaigns that advance union priorities and increase organizational capacity:
- Inform and consult with the Organizing Director about organizing activity, attend weekly meetings and additional debriefs as necessary.
- Identify and develop new member leaders through 1-1 relationship building and training.
- Develop new teams of active members and union activists.
- Increase membership and COPE contributors with routine membership drives, including faculty to faculty outreach and signing up new members on campus
- Lead District-wide and campus-based issue campaigns (e.g. contract negotiations, budget issues, problems with work conditions), including data management, communications and coordination.
- Organize member support for Guild endorsed electoral and political campaigns.
- Work with the Communications team and other key individuals to develop and implement effective and concise digital and traditional communications strategies for Guild campaigns:
- Develop strategic communications (both member and external), messaging, narration, graphic and digital communications (e.g. social media, Hustle, flyers).
- Create specific content for the major social media platforms to engage membership;
- Create and edit basic digital content as needed.
- Work with the Membership Coordinator and Organizing Director to ensure accurate and timely reporting and recording of data:
- Acquire and track membership statistics relevant to Guild campaigns, including contact info, work location, classification, membership, and COPE status.
- Record and track data related to member participation and leadership development using Guild data management systems including AFT Connect, Action Builder, and developing other internal tools.
- Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications:
- Two or more years of union or community organizing experience is preferred. Experience in other organizing contexts will also be considered.
- BA from an accredited four-year university preferred.
- Contract campaigns or union internal organizing experience is a strong plus. Experience building committees/teams in an organizing context is a plus.
- Familiarity with contract language, bargaining procedure, or knowledge of labor rights is a plus.
- Prior experience with public education or higher education is helpful.
- Ability to drive to LACCD campuses and worksites throughout Los Angeles County. Driver’s License and vehicle required.
- Ability to establish rapport with and organize individuals from widely diversified ethnic, social, and economic groups.
- Ability to communicate well in writing and orally.
- Ability to maintain work files and manage membership assessments.
- Proficiency with computers and applications including, but not limited to: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, major social media applications, Canvas, etc
- Good judgment and ability to discern priorities when faced with many important tasks.
- Willingness to work independently, with occasional long and irregular hours.
