About the Position
Join the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, an Organized Research Unit focused on space‑related sciences and education. SSL reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and collaborates closely with faculty and senior fellows on experiments, observations, and theoretical research.
Position Summary
This role requires an opto‑mechanical engineer experienced in designing and assembling opto‑mechanical systems, including spectrographs, cameras, and spaceflight mechanisms such as filter wheels. The engineer will develop CAD‑based designs, perform finite element modelling, and conduct laboratory assembly and alignment of optical elements up to 1 m in diameter. Responsibilities include leading design efforts, coordinating with optical engineers, supervising lower‑level staff, and ensuring integration of all components.
Responsibilities
- Develop CAD‑based opto‑mechanical studies for UV Imagers.
- Lead overall opto‑mechanical effort, including mirror mount design, primary structure design, and oversight of mechanisms.
- Collaborate with optical engineers to meet fabrication guidelines and project schedule.
- Plan, organize, and supervise lower‑level engineers and technical staff.
- Develop plans and procedures for assembling precision opto‑mechanical systems.
- Perform systems engineering responsibilities to integrate opto‑mechanical components.
- Ensure designs support optical requirements and performance specifications.
- Create detailed drawings and specifications for optics and assemblies.
- Work with vendors for optimal solutions.
- Integrate sub‑specialties across aerospace disciplines.
- Lead mechanical assembly and integration of space‑flight or large ground‑based instruments.
- Lead research objectives with investigators, contractors, and campus staff.
- Coordinate with project management to meet technical, schedule, and budget goals.
- Lead a team of professional engineers and technicians (when appropriate).
Required Qualifications
- Advanced skills in planning, development, and construction of space systems, including a successful complex space instrument from concept to launch.
- Experience leading opto‑mechanical design from concept to delivery.
- Advanced mechanical CAD (SolidWorks) and finite element analysis (FEA) proficiency.
- Experience designing and analysing optical mounts for vibration, shock, thermal, and optical performance.
- Proficiency with optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio or Code V.
- Strong systems engineering knowledge to integrate multiple fields.
- Experience in mechanical integration of space‑flight instruments or large ground‑based instruments.
- Project management skills: organization, planning, QA, contamination control, and scheduling.
- Staff supervision and objective setting experience.
- Advanced degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with space‑system development in the UV region.
- Support for a NASA Explorers‑class mission or a facility‑class instrument for a large ground‑based observatory.
- Post‑graduate coursework in a related area.
