Role: Platform Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL

Duration 6 months with possible extension

Hybrid 3 days onsite a week

Pay range: $75-$80/hr(The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.)

• Building AWS tools: Someone who writes Python code to automate how AWS resources are created and deployed. Look for AWS infrastructure-as-code experience, especially CDK.
• Maintaining Jenkins: Someone who keeps Jenkins running and personally fixes problems with it. Using existing pipelines alone is not enough
• AI tools experience like Claude code or windsurf, etc.

Strongest emphasis is AWS, infrastructure as code, Jenkins and hands-on coding .

Work rotates across:

1. Internal engineering support: Troubleshoot tooling and pipeline failures, provide workarounds and fix bugs.
2. Vulnerability and compliance remediation: Resolve findings in repositories the teams own.
3. Enterprise changes: Complete required upgrades and AWS account migrations, recreate resources and update provisioning tools. S3 bucket provisioning was one example.

Most engineers will support the software that provisions infrastructure; a subset may work more directly with infrastructure.

Must have background experience

Jenkins operations engineers: Target DevOps, CI/CD, build and release, or platform engineers who have personally operated Jenkins. Look for evidence of what they maintained, changed or repaired. Running builds or writing pipeline files alone does not establish operational ownership. Matt estimated that roughly half his hiring need may emphasize this background; the exact count remains unconfirmed.

Python/AWS tooling engineers: Target platform software, developer productivity, developer experience, cloud automation and DevOps engineers with substantial coding ownership. Look for experience building and supporting automation or deployment tools, AWS infrastructure as code and Jenkins workflows.

Technology priorities

• AWS knowledge and Jenkins experience carry more weight than matching every listed language.
• Python is the primary tooling language.
• AWS CDK is used significantly. TypeScript and Groovy are also present; Jenkins pipelines use Groovy syntax.
• Docker experience is useful. The AWS container service mentioned needs confirmation.
• Lambda, DynamoDB and Fargate remain in the listed stack.
• Some Terraform use remains, but much is being phased out.
• Claude Code/Windsurf and software architecture remain listed. Capture experience; the required depth and lead-level expectations need clarification.
