Position Summary

The Lead Therapist provides individual, group, and family therapy sessions for clients in Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) levels of care. The Lead Therapist role consists of direct clinical care, providing clinical supervision to clinical team members and interns, developing/improving group curriculum, and supporting overall care coordination. This position is responsible for assessing the therapeutic needs of the individuals and families, and for developing appropriate treatment plans. The Lead Therapist acts as the primary point of contact for clients and families throughout the treatment process and serves as a client advocate with the treatment team. Position acts as a liaison with referral sources, clinical partners, and internal resources to coordinate care throughout the treatment process.

Within the organization: Initiates and maintains frequent and close working relationships with staff, clients, families, facility, and peers throughout the organization.

Outside the organization : Initiates and maintains strong professional relationships with clinical providers, referral partners and vendors, as needed.

Position Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities
  1. Assesses the therapeutic needs of clients, determining appropriate interventions, and conducting individual and group therapy sessions in accordance with these needs.
  2. Assists with the creation and coordination of clinical program schedules in partnership with the Executive Director and clinical team members.
  3. Oversees weekly group assignments and topics to ensure balanced therapist workloads and programming tailored to current cohort needs.
  4. Completes psychosocial evaluations, treatment plans, session notes, discharge plans and other reports required for each client in compliance with State, accrediting bodies, quality guidelines and payor source guidelines.
  5. Supports clinical team in meeting documentation and utilization review deadlines and requirements.
  6. Provides clinical coverage in the absence of the Executive Director to include precertification of new admissions, urgent/emergent clinical decision making and facilitation of treatment team meetings.
  7. Provides mentorship and supervision to associate level clinicians and interns.
  8. Conducts weekly individual and family therapy sessions for assigned caseload.
  9. Monitors behavioral interventions for clients and provides skills coaching, as needed.
  10. Conducts specialized groups as assigned based on education, training, and experience; supervises or co-leads groups with staff or interns when appropriate.
  11. Maintains therapeutic relationship with clients using praise and other reinforcers to encourage appropriate behaviors and attitudes, setting limits, and maintaining therapeutic boundaries in a kind and firm manner.
  12. Utilizes effective verbal crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, involving other staff as needed.
  13. Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to coordinate client care from admission through discharge.
  14. Co-facilitates weekly clinical, consultation and business meetings; present cases to be discussed as pre-assigned.
  15. Completes documentation in a timely and accurate manner reflecting ongoing assessment of client's clinical presentation and behaviors in accordance with policy and procedures.
  16. Communicates client progress with the referral source, family, parent, or guardian informed of treatment goals and plans, as appropriate.
  17. Leverages the referral process to build relationships with new referents and engages in collaboration with referents.
  18. Welcomes clients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in a professional and respectful manner.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing treatment and results data and trends.
  2. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  3. Functions within the guidelines of the facility's Code of Ethics and in accordance with corporate compliance.
  4. Consistently arrives to work on time, rarely missing scheduled shifts, and promptly notifies supervisor when absent.
  5. Demonstrates an ability to adapt to changes in the facility function, management styles, and facility routines.
  6. Reads, understands, adheres to, and models all company policy statements on ethics, conduct, and conflict of interests.
  7. Adheres to facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, implementing regularly.
  8. Maintains positive attitude and acts as a team player with others on the treatment team.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

What We're Seeking

Position requires a master's degree in social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling or psychology. Must hold clinical license of LCSW, LPC or LMFT, in good standing, within the state of Virginia for a minimum of 2 years. Requires minimum of 4 years' of experience working with clients with a primary mental health diagnosis.

Additional Requirements
  • Position requires incumbent to have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Clearance of criminal background, TB test, and any other mandatory state/federal requirements.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification

  • Care Planning and Intervention - demonstrates the ability to develop and implement evidence-informed care plans that promote clinical excellence throughout the client-centered continuum of care. Care plans outline necessary steps, identified collaboratively with the care team, to achieve objectives identified in the biopsychosocial assessment. Leverages evidence-informed, clinically excellent treatment interventions.
  • Advocacy - Demonstrates the ability to appropriately advocate for the needs and interest of clients and families; promotes clinical excellence through quality improvement initiatives, improved outcomes, access to care, and service delivery.
  • Interdisciplinary and Interorganizational Collaboration - demonstrate the ability to promote cross functional collaboration among team members and referral partners to support and enhance clinical service delivery and support.
