Phlebotomist

Summary The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis. Responsibilities Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures, responding to the needs of customers of all ages and helping to resolve exceptions. Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens. Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups by following exact protocols and procedures, including patient preparation prior to testing and administration of various glucose dosages. Handles specimens, selecting the appropriate specimen type to ensure high quality, reliable test results and providing the timely distribution of specimens to ensure the shortest possible turnaround time, while communicating with and preparing esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories and maintaining specimen integrity. Other Duties and Responsibilities Follows patient registration procedures where required. Follows strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens. Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices and policies, follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required. Computer skills: uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) for scheduling workload, interpreting test orders, placing orders into the computer, retrieving billing information, assisting with patient registration, and communicating test results in accordance with confidentiality standards. Adheres to all laboratory policies and procedures, maintains confidentiality of all medical information, and complies with Federal CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations. Demonstrates knowledge and competence in treating patients ranging from birth to 100+ years. Has access to the medication room for use of the pneumatic tube station where applicable. All other duties as assigned. Certifications and Licensures Valid driver’s license (required for transportation of the company vehicle). Fingerprinting (required). Required Education High school completion is required. A formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical experience, or equivalent education, as well as a minimum of 3-4 years of phlebotomy experience, is also acceptable. Experience, Training and Skills Communication, customer service, and organizational skills are required. Mandatory OSHA training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan. Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines, laboratory test and medical terminology, and current laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols is preferred. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Must wear personal protective equipment, including latex or appropriate substitutes. Must be able to move freely throughout the facility, with or without an assistive device. Requires visual and hearing acuity, with or without assistive devices. Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may require stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must comply with bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Requires ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert. Requires overall dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; repetitions may occur regularly. Physical Demand Level: Light. Must occasionally lift or carry 11-20 lbs, frequently lift 10 lbs, and perform arm/leg controls such as walking, standing, pushing, or pulling.
