Job Summary The Withdrawal Management Nurse Practitioner provides same-day psychiatric and medical assessments and medication management for individuals experiencing acute substance use and withdrawal symptoms. This role includes conducting comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluations, initiating evidence-based withdrawal management protocols, and prescribing medications to safely manage withdrawal symptoms. Patient Assessment & Clinical Care Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and medical evaluations for individuals presenting with substance use and/or withdrawal symptoms. Provide immediate, evidence-based interventions to manage withdrawal symptoms safely and effectively. Evaluate the severity of withdrawal and determine appropriate withdrawal management interventions. Provide timely clinical stabilization and initiate evidence-based treatment plans. Assess and address co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions that may complicate withdrawal and recovery. Perform same day withdrawal management visits in a timely manner. Medication Management Prescribe, monitor, and manage medications used in withdrawal management and substance use disorder treatment. Initiate and monitor medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate, including medications such as Buprenorphine and Methadone, in accordance with clinical protocols and regulatory requirements. Monitor patient response to medications and adjust treatment plans as clinically indicated, ensuring safe and effective management of withdrawal symptoms. Collaborate with the medical team to manage medications for pain, anxiety, and other related conditions. Ensure safe prescribing practices and adherence to regulatory requirements for controlled substances. Care Coordination & Interdisciplinary Collaboration Work closely with physicians, nurses, counselors, and addiction specialists to develop coordinated and integrated treatment plans. Participate in interdisciplinary care team meetings to review patient progress and adjust treatment strategies. Coordinate transitions of care with primary care providers, behavioral health services, and community resources following stabilization. Support continuity of care by facilitating appropriate referrals for ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment. Patient Education & Recovery Support Provide education to patients and families regarding substance use disorders, withdrawal symptoms, medication-assisted treatment, and the recovery process. Discuss medication risks, benefits and side effects to support informed decision-making. Encourage engagement in recovery support and community resources that promote life-long recovery and stability. Ensure that patients and families are fully informed about the treatment plan and follow-up care. Documentation & Regulatory Compliance Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation, treatment plans and follow-up care in accordance with organizational policies and applicable state and federal regulations. Ensure compliance with prescribing regulations, medication management, withdrawal management protocols, and documentation standards. Support program compliance with applicable substance use disorder treatment regulations and standards. Required Skills & Experience (Minimum Qualifications): Education Master’s degree in advanced practice nursing. Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Board certification as a PMHNP-BC. Background in primary care nursing such as Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) preferred. Licensure Active, unrestricted Advanced Practice Registered Nursing license with MN Board of Nursing. Active DEA registration with authority to prescribe controlled substances, including medications used in withdrawal management and addiction treatment. Experience Minimum of 1 year of experience in psychiatric, addiction medicine or withdrawal management settings. Experience assessing and managing acute substance withdrawal and co-occurring psychiatric or medical conditions. Familiarity with harm reduction principles and trauma-informed care approaches. DEA DATA waiver (or eligibility) to prescribe buprenorphine. Demonstrated skills in the acute management of patients. Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in psychiatric and addiction medicine. Knowledge and experience with pharmacologic management of withdrawal symptoms and medication-assisted treatment. Ability to respond effectively to urgent clinical situations and stabilize patients in acute distress. Patient-centered, compassionate approach to care. Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills. Ability to integrate psychiatric and medical considerations when stabilizing patients experiencing withdrawal. Comfort and compassion in working with individuals facing life-controlling challenges, such as mental health issues and addiction.
