Job Summary

To maintain a high quality of work performance in speech therapy. Performs professional speech language pathology services that are concerned with prevention, treatment and restoration of disorders of speech, language, voice, and oral-pharyngeal and cognitive/communication following trauma, disease or developmental disabilities. This may include various speech tests, measurements, and exercises. Operate in a lead capacity for anticipated questions and guidance; also, required to provide prompt decisions while ensuring safe, efficient, and effective speech services.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Post-Graduate Degree in Speech Language Pathology from a school or program determined by the South Carolina State Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology to be equivalent to those accredited by the Council on Professional Standards of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Minimum Years of Experience: 3 years experience in acute care setting Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None Required Certifications/Licensure: Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) or its equivalent as approved by the South Carolina State Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology; Licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) by the South Carolina State Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology; CPR Certification. Required Training: None

Essential Functions

Provides direct speech language pathology services upon referral by a physician or advanced practice provider using specific competencies. Performs all duties of the SLP. Demonstrates Age specific competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: a. Infant (Birth to 1 year) b. Child (1 year through 12 years) c. Adolescent (13 years through 17 years) d. Adult (18 years to 65 years) e. Geriatric (over 65 years). Develops speech therapy treatment plans and monitors progress. Administers speech therapy treatments. Documents/records appropriate patient treatment data, such as patient progress notes, evaluation reports and discharge summaries. Works with manager/director/schedulers to coordinate the work flow and ensure timely and accurate service. Must utilize good judgment and makes appropriate decisions above and beyond that required of a staff SLP. Represents department and communicates with the interdisciplinary team for discharge planning and coordination of medical services during hospital stay. Represents department in meetings, such as attending patient care conferences and providing in-services for other hospital departments such as nursing, housekeeping, etc. Assist in providing clinical supervision of rehab techs and students in their duties. Uses effective time management to complete patient care assignments and meets departmental productivity standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

Demonstrates sound professional judgement and acts in accordance with the state speech pathologist and audiologists therapy practice act, hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Participates in professional activities for continued self-development, and growth of technical knowledge and skills; Completes a minimum of 10 education hours annually in current area of practice with at least 4 of those hours in leadership. Communicates back to the management team without prompting. Provides input to manager/director on personnel matters including competence, performance, praise, discipline, hiring and discharge. Therapist will be able to meet deadlines and commitments with minimal supervision. Uses safe techniques and safe patient handling equipment as needed for protection of patients and self while performing duties. Demonstrates competence in safe delivery of care. Is a role model for service excellence. Will be assigned charge duties as needed. Collaborates with the clinical educator to assist in the development of new services, programs and preparation for annual departmental competencies. Performs all other duties as assigned.
