Job Title & Specialty Area: RN - Team Leader Department: Emergency Department Location: Children's Health Dallas Shift: 3:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Job Type: On‑Site Summary The Team Leader Nursing Critical Care provides leadership to front‑line staff in collaboration with the Clinical Manager or Practice Administrator. The role serves as a conduit between nursing employees and management, facilitating communication, overseeing orientation of new team members with Clinical Educators, and evaluating clinical practice with a focus on quality and performance improvement. The Team Leader balances 60% clinical responsibilities and 40% administrative/leadership duties, ensuring at least 10% of clinical time is spent coaching and developing staff. Critical care settings include intensive care units and/or the emergency department. Responsibilities Perform all aspects of the Clinical Nurse job description during scheduled bedside care shifts. Participate in the interview and selection process of new team members. Administer periodic evaluations and annual PEAC’s/merit increases for staff. Provide performance feedback, counseling, and documentation of performance issues. Maintain positive staff relations through Evidence Based Leadership and Just Culture. Complete scouting reports and weekly rounding on staff. Ensure staff remain informed of changes within the unit, department, division, and organization. Mentor staff and provide developmental opportunities to help them achieve career goals. Administer disciplinary action when necessary, up to and including terminations, with support of manager, director, and HR. Recognize staff appropriately and develop Action Plans from Employee Opinion Survey feedback. Accountable for staff meeting patient care needs, safety standards, effectiveness, patient rights, and guest relations. Ensure staff deliver care with team orientation, customer relations, sound clinical judgment, and evidence‑based practice. Ensure staff are responsible for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating patient care using clinical judgment based on nursing skills and evidence‑based guidelines. Balance staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and skill mix on every shift. Monitor trends with attendance and address dependability issues with team members. Approve PTO requests and monitor FMLA/STD/LOA for team members. Process Lawson personnel actions for staff and maintain accurate timecards for payroll. Develop and maintain positive physician relations. Ensure clean sweeps/unit‑based audits and disease‑specific certification audits where applicable. Conduct unit environmental rounds and monitor expiration of staff licenses and certifications. Ensure timely submission of employee paperwork to HR and protect PHI at all times. Adhere to infection prevention initiatives such as hand hygiene and waste disposal. Assume Charge Nurse role as needed. Take on patient load shift as required. Maintain knowledge of unit‑specific super users and ensure they remain qualified. Conduct family rounding when rolled out to the unit. Attend leadership meetings, complete projects, and participate in committees as assigned. Ensure staff provide education and facilitate learning for patients, families, and care teams with sensitivity to diversity. Collaborate with physicians, families, and staff to develop and implement patient care plans promoting each person’s contributions to best outcomes. Advocate for patients and staff, represent concerns, and resolve ethical and clinical issues. Maintain knowledge and tools to manage environmental and system resources for patients and staff across healthcare systems. Continuously assess patient condition, question and evaluate the situation, and direct treatment changes in collaboration with the healthcare team. Qualifications Work Experience At least 2 years of clinical experience required; leadership experience preferred. Education BSN required. Licenses & Certifications Current license to practice professional nursing in Texas (upon hire). Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements. PALS/NRP/ACLS‑department specific requirements. Effective April 20, 2020, new employees must obtain PACES certification within 6 months of hire; existing employees must obtain PACES certification upon expiration of their PEARS certification (no later than April 20, 2022), with additional department‑specific requirements.
