SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this individual performs skilled and specialized mechanical work including responsibilities for Auto Mechanic II.

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Perform all duties of an Auto Mechanic I and II.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on automotive vehicles and light, medium, and heavy equipment, including complex hydraulic systems and automated refuse collection systems.
• Troubleshoot electrical systems, including ignitions, lights, and instrument panels and analyze and determine cause of malfunction, including those in transmissions.
• Repair and adjust both air and hydraulic brake systems which include air valves, springs, wheel bearings, drive lines, steering components, repair of PTO's, hydraulic pumps, and related parts.
• Test drive vehicles after making repairs and record corrective repair made, labor and time involved, parts and materials used for each job on work orders. 
• Perform any other assigned duties.

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has supervisory responsibilities over Mechanics I, II and subordinate supervisors. One to three employees report to the subordinate supervisors.

• Ability to be on 24-hour emergency call.
• Requires working knowledge of methods, practices, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
• Requires ability to use a variety of tools and equipment necessary for mechanical maintenance.
• Requires ability to read gauges and meters accurately and to maintain accurate records.
• Very good knowledge of the electrical and mechanical principles governing the functioning of control systems and instruments.
• Very good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the area of work assignments.
• Must be capable of assimilating safety training and work accordingly.
• Must possess good knowledge of the principles and repair of internal combustion engines.
• Must be skilled in the use of hand tools, and in the operation of equipment employed in automotive repair and adjusting.
• Regular prompt attendance is an essential function to this position.
• The ability to get along and promote a harmonious working environment with vendors, supervisors, citizens, and co-workers

 EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License ( CDL ), Class B with airbrake and passenger endorsements within six months of employment.
