REPORTS TO

The Director of Athletics, who provides final evaluation to the superintendent.

SUMMARY

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and an increased level of self‑esteem.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Has full responsibility for the overall supervision of the program. Responsible for the general upkeep, protection, and inventory of equipment and uniforms used in the sport. Ensures knowledge of league regulations and abides by them at all times. Assists the athletic coordinator in providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events. Attends all league meetings regarding scheduling and rule updates specific to the sport. Responsible for developing schedules for all levels of play and communicates schedule changes to the Director of Athletics or athletic coordinator. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment storage areas. Assists in preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Makes recommendations for awards and clarifies award policy to athletes. Participates in the budgeting process with the Director of Athletics, establishes requirements for the next season, and operates within the established budget. Has thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in the student‑athlete handbook and CIAC handbook, explains and reinforces rules of training and code of conduct in the handbook along with CIAC eligibility rules to all team members. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ office, allowing athletes to be in authorized areas only, and never leaves athletes unsupervised during scheduled practices. Examines locker rooms, equipment rooms, and playing safe areas before and after team use, checking general cleanliness and safety. Secures all doors, lights, windows, gates, locks, and alarm when leaving the building or outside facility when custodians are not on duty. Submits necessary postseason reports to the Director of Athletics at the conclusion of the season. Responsible for the actions and conduct of the team whenever they are under jurisdiction. Responsible for the general health and welfare of student‑athletes in the sport. Communicates instructions and commands using clear, simple, and positive language. Pays appropriate attention to athletes who are injured or ill, and follows protocol set by the athletic department in regards to injured athletes. Organizes pre‑season meetings for players and coaches. Evals performance of student‑athletes, provides suitable feedback, balancing critique with positive and motivating comments. Maintains good public relations with media, parents, officials, opponents, and fans. Instills respect for equipment and school property; directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Maintains current Connecticut coaching certification with the State of Connecticut Department of Education. Performs other duties consistent with the nature of the position that may be requested by the Director of Athletics and/or principal.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Valid Connecticut coaching certification or temporary emergency coaching permit. Updated CPR/First Aid training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education. Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.

SALARY
