School Bus Driver
This position under general supervision is responsible for, safely transporting students of all grade levels (K-12) including pre-school, to and from school, on field trips, athletic activities and other special trips or activities.
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of, and enforces District policy(ies) and procedures at all times.
- Maintains thorough working knowledge of all laws, procedures and regulations governing school bus drivers and student transportation.
- Performs evacuation drills as required.
- Performs pre-trip inspection on bus prior to driving.
- Drives District vehicles safely while transporting students from home to school.
- Transports students and adult chaperones on school activities during and outside of school hours.
- Monitors appropriate behavior of students.
- Maintains discipline and control of students on buses at all times.
- Reports disruptions and behavioral issues to the appropriate school office.
- Responsible for maintaining bus in good repair, cleans bus daily and replenishes fuel and oil as needed.
- Assists students loading onto bus, conducts required passenger instruction and administers first aid to passengers as required.
- Completes all required reports on a timely basis.
- Drives a school bus over an assigned route in accordance with a specified time schedule.
- Transports physically handicapped, and other special education students to designated points within the District and the county, based on student needs.
- Performs a daily bus inspection, completes daily vehicle condition report and prepares daily reports of mileage, time and student loads.
- Evacuates the bus in an emergency situation.
- Secures wheelchairs and assists students in wheelchairs on and off the ramp lift.
- Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff and students.
- Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Complies with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Attends in-service trainings.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Reports road and other hazards as necessary.

- Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or at least six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior successful experience working in the transportation industry or as a bus driver strongly preferred.
- Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions and ability to successfully work with students.
- Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, and internet software.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions and noise. Ability to operate a bus and follow all traffic safety laws. Requires the ability to enter and exit a bus to load and assist students.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card, Oregon commercial driver's license (CDL), school bus driver's certificate/licenses, bloodborne pathogen training and blood spill training. Must have a good driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; stand; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel or crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision. Employees must have the ability to get in and out of a vehicle.
Specifically must have the ability to: a. Open and close manually operated bus entrance door control with a force of at least 30 pounds. b. Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 inches. c. Operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly. d. Have a reaction time of three-fourths of a second or less from the throttle to the brake control. e. Carry or drag a 125-pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less. f. Depress a brake pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 90 pounds. g. Depress a clutch pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 40 pounds. h. Exit from an emergency door opening of 24 by 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in ten seconds or less.
The work environment is a school bus setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
