School Nurse

Under the supervision of the building principals and the Coordinator of Health Services, this position provides health services to students and staff in Stafford County Public Schools (SCPS) on an as-needed basis. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for students, ensuring continuity of care when the regular school nurse is absent. The substitute will adhere to all SCPS policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations.

Provide Health Services to Students

• Provide direct nursing care, first aid, and emergency care to students and staff.
• Administer medications and perform medical procedures as prescribed by a physician and in accordance with SCPS policy.
• Maintain accurate and confidential health records.
• Assess students who are ill or injured and determine appropriate interventions, including dismissal from school or referral to a healthcare provider.
• Communicate with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student health issues.
• Assist with health screenings (e.g., vision and hearing) as needed.
• Respond to and manage medical emergencies.
• Ensure a safe and sanitary clinic environment.

Education and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Must hold a valid, active Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Previous experience in a school setting, pediatric care, or public health is preferred but not required.
• Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of English grammar and usage, child growth and development, currently mandated safety regulations such as OSHA, etc., related state regulations.
• Skills to adhere to Guidelines of Confidentiality as outlined in Federal and State laws and county policies and procedures, application of theory to practice by use of most recent techniques and information which govern actions.
• Abilities to appropriate use of written and verbal communication, work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals, organize and perform work independently, meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects, show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled but may require some exposure to weather, and some exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
• The work is medium work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
