Registered Nurse – CVICU / Cardiothoracic ICU

Schedule / Job Type

Contract (13 Weeks, with Possible Extension) | Nights | 4x12-Hour Shifts | 19:00–07:30 | Every other weekend, floating, and holidays within the contract are required | Travelers must work two of the three winter holidays | Block scheduling cannot be accommodated | 48-hour contract options may be available; overtime may be applicable after 48 hours — indicate preference at time of submission

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care in a Cardiothoracic ICU setting utilizing a universal bed model, which includes caring for step-down patients as needed
• Manage and monitor advanced hemodynamic devices including Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) , Impella , FloTrac/Vigileo, and Pulmonary Artery/Swan-Ganz lines
• Care for post-cardiac surgery patients (directly from OR and non-direct), pre/post cardiac cath/intervention patients, and patients with multi-system organ failure
• Titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips; administer and manage continuous IV sedation and procedural sedation; manage IV insulin protocols and CVVHD/CRRT
• Provide strong neurological care including post-brain surgery patients, EVD/ventriculostomy experience, and CVA/acute stroke management
• Manage ventilated patients including ventilator management, ABG interpretation, BiPAP/CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), and suctioning (ETT/NT); maintain infection prevention and isolation precautions

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a CVICU or CTICU setting
• Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license in hand at time of submission — no exceptions
• Proficiency in Epic EMR — no exceptions
• BLS certification (American Heart Association only)
• ACLS certification (American Heart Association only)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Must live more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
• No prior license or background hits will be considered — no exceptions
• Facility cannot accommodate PAPR; any history of fit test issues will disqualify a candidate — no exceptions
• EKG/telemetry test required prior to start; must score 80% or higher (one attempt, no remediation); covers interval measurements, complex identification, and rhythm identification
• Approximately 3 hours of pre-start online modules required (billable)

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Previous travel nursing experience strongly preferred
• Experience with CABG patients and post-cardiac surgery care directly from the OR
• Proficiency with arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines, and advanced IV skills including blood product administration
• Experience with surgical wounds, wound VAC, and drain management
