Biosafety Manager

Position Summary The Biosafety Manager is responsible for the leadership, strategic planning, finances and management of UCLA's biosafety, high containment, and vivarium safety programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. The role oversees six EH&S professionals and serves as the campus Biosafety Officer, Alternate Responsible Official, and manager of BSL-3 and vivarium operations. Lead and manage BSL-3 facilities and operations, coordinating with the High Containment Director and Associate Biosafety Officer. Oversee the Vivarium Safety Officer and provide safety services to vivarium staff and researchers. Schedule and assign biological use authorization reviews and laboratory inspections, including animal biocontainment facilities. Act as point of contact during regulatory inspections (NIH, CDC, USDA, etc.). Review and manage the campus medical waste program. Provide input for Research Safety Plan reviews. Develop and maintain the UCLA Biosafety Manual, Exposure Control Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and other documentation. Develop and maintain biosafety training programs. Oversee comprehensive financial management, budget administration, equipment acquisition, inventory, training programs, and funding opportunities. Lead hazardous materials spill response efforts for regular and off-hour emergencies. Provide full personnel administration (hiring, evaluation, assignments, merit, discipline, grievance) for six specialists. Salary & Compensation UCLA provides a full pay range. Salary offers are based on budget, experience, skills, education, and other factors. Benefits begin on day one and include the standard UC benefit package. Qualifications Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in biosafety, including management of BSL-3 or higher containment facilities and working with infectious agents, human gene transfer, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids. Animal handling experience (preferred). Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing professional staff in a highly regulated environment, including mentoring and performance management. In-depth knowledge of NIH Guidelines, Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Cal/OSHA Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard, and federal select agent regulations. Experience with vivarium operations and high containment environments, managing risks associated with animal care, zoonotic diseases and infectious agents. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, administrators, managers, subordinates and academia. Ability to analyze complex technical data from environmental surveys, using logic and quantitative reasoning. Ability to make oral presentations and lead meetings with diverse audiences. Skill in clear, concise written communication for training, inspection, and information dissemination. Experience coordinating and delegating tasks with various groups to meet common goals. Education & Credentials Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Industrial Hygiene or related biological science or safety disciplines, or equivalent experience. Master's degree or PhD preferred but not required. Current professional biosafety registration or certification (RBP or CBSP) or eligibility for certification. Special Conditions Background check: continued employment contingent upon satisfactory investigation. Live Scan background check required prior to start. Satisfactory physical examination required. COVID and flu vaccinations required. Driving record must meet California DMV pull notice system. Subject to medical surveillance and safety training per university and state policies.
