Join us!Purpose of Job:The Environmental Specialist will ensure our operations meet all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This role will be responsible for conducting on-site audits, managing hazardous waste disposal, and interpreting complex environmental laws to mitigate risk and promote sustainable practices.Job Components:Monitor and interpret regulations from the EPA and state agencies (e.g., RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act) to ensure organizational adherence.Developing and/or revising various U.S. EPA and/or state-required regulatory written programs.Authoring environmental compliance reports by local, state, and federal requirements (e.g., RCRA, Tier II, CA Hazardous Materials Business Plans, EPCRA 312 and 313 reporting)Conduct routine facility inspections and audits to identify potential compliance gaps and recommend corrective actions.Collect and analyze samples (soil, water, air), interpret laboratory results, and maintain accurate records for agency reporting.Lead investigations into environmental incidents, such as spills or unauthorized releases, and coordinate remediation efforts.Develop and deliver environmental training programs for staff to ensure awareness of hazardous waste handling and safety protocols.Abide by OSHA and DOT Hazmat regulations.Conduct Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Civil/Environmental Engineering, or a related field.2–5+ years of experience in environmental regulatory compliance, preferably in an industrial or consulting setting.Proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel for data analysis).Valid state driver’s license required for frequent travel to work sites.Familiar with OSHA and DOT Hazmat regulations.Experience with Phase I and II Environmental Site AssessmentsPreferred Skills:Proven background in environmental management (multi-site experience preferred)Experience with the California Environmental Reporting System a plus.Experience with Battery Stewardship Programs a plus.Strong communication skills for negotiating with regulatory agencies and presenting findings to stakeholders.Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines under moderate supervision.Strong problem-solving skills coupled with being detail-oriented.Proven ability to take a proactive approach to pollution prevention.Experience implementing ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems a plus.Professional certifications such as Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager (REM) or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP).Scope Data:Be a technical expert and liaison with regulatory agencies.Work across multiple facilities and cross-functionally with other Interstate departments to mitigate environmental risks and implement sustainable operational practices.Exemplify Interstate’s Purpose and Values.Work EnvironmentAbility to travel up to 40%.Ability to operate a motor vehicle.Ability to sustain posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time.Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.Ability to occasionally lift and/or move 10+ lbs.May be exposed to battery warehouse conditions such as exposure to moving equipment, mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling, and the ability to lift or move equipment as needed.Note: We do not accept resumes from headhunters, placement agencies, or other suppliers that have not signed a formal agreement with us.Interstate Batteries provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, amnesty, or status as a covered veteran in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws.
