What You'll Do

Provide expert healthcare guidance to students, staff, and families, ensuring everyone has access to the support they need. Implement and oversee preventative health programs, such as screenings, immunization efforts, and wellness education. Collaborate with educators and administrators to foster a safe and inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive. Train school personnel on medication administration, emergency procedures, and early detection of health concerns. Act as a first responder to medical situations, offering calm, skilled care in moments that matter most. Maintain accurate health records, ensuring compliance with state regulations while keeping student confidentiality a top priority.

QUALIFICATIONS

Passion for reimagining education and a commitment to student-centered, personalized learning approaches. Bachelor's degree (required); teaching certification (preferred, but not mandatory for exceptional candidates). Experience in project-based learning, real-world education, or advisory models (Big Picture Learning experience is a plus). Strong ability to build relationships and mentor students in an entrepreneurial, innovative setting. Creativity and flexibility in designing non-traditional learning experiences. Commitment to ensuring all students are valued and supported. Willingness to collaborate, take initiative, and problem-solve in a startup school environment. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage families and community partners in the learning process. Proficiency in using technology for personalized instruction and student engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administers First Aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. Assists the school administration and school staff in developing school health programs. Aids in the primary prevention and control of communicable diseases. Supervises and trains designated personnel in the administration of medications and the operation of healthcare equipment. Instructs teachers on screening students for health problems. Provides effective in-service education on health-related topics for school system personnel. Participates in planning and implementing student health plans (504, IEPs, food allergy plans, etc.). May visit students' homes when necessary. Serves as the liaison between health professionals and the school system regarding the health needs of students. Coordinates and implements health screenings mandated by state law. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential health and emotional problems of students. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. Coordinates PEEHIP screenings for staff and flu vaccination clinics for students as needed. Supervises designated licensed personnel in the performance of invasive procedures. Speaks to PTA, parent or civic groups, and faculty groups as requested. Works with community agencies to provide improved health services. Assists school personnel in maintaining environmental standards in the school. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Reports suspected child abuse, domestic violence, and neglect to the Mobile County Department of Human Resources (DHR). Recommends exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with Board policy on infections and contagious diseases/conditions. Serves on school's system committees, task forces, and representatives' groups as required. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

REQUIREMENTS

Must have and maintain a valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse. Possess and maintain any other certificate required by state law. Possess a valid CPR Card. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and the ability to have access to appropriate and reliable transportation to meet job requirements. Must have verifiable two (2) years of nurse experience in a hospital, school, or community health setting. Knowledge of effective procedures and practice for vision, hearing, and other appropriate health screening activities and programs. Knowledge of current medical and pediatric nursing practices.
