Development & Communications Manager

Position Overview: NCBF seeks an individual with excellent fundraising, communications, and relationship-building capabilities, as well as the judgment and character to engage effectively with donors, volunteers, directly impacted community members, media representatives, organizational partners, and other members of the community. Fundraising and communications are essential to NCBF’s sustainability and public impact; it is critical for our Development & Communications Manager to build the relationships, campaigns, systems, and messaging that strengthen community investment in our mission to end cash bail and pretrial detention in Washington State.

Development operations include creating and executing NCBF’s annual fundraising strategy, cultivating and stewarding donors, managing fundraising campaigns, maintaining accurate donor and gift records, and leading the Donor/Fundraising Volunteer Team. Communications operations includes developing organizational messaging, managing NCBF’s digital platforms, producing newsletters and social media content, managing the Volunteer Social Media and Story Teams, coordinating media relations, and ensuring NCBF’s public storytelling centers the dignity, consent, safety, and leadership of directly impacted people.

The volume and complexity of development and communications work can be unpredictable, particularly during fundraising campaigns, breaking news, media requests, and organizational events. The ideal candidate will navigate this work with creativity, accountability, responsiveness, and empathy in equal measure. They must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, communicate clearly across audiences, maintain meticulous systems, and make values-aligned decisions both independently and collaboratively.

In addition to strengthening NCBF’s existing fundraising and communications work, the Development & Communications Manager will build sustainable infrastructure for donor cultivation, major gifts, community-led fundraising, consent-based storytelling, media engagement, volunteer leadership, and performance reporting. Deepening relationships with supporters and creating communications that move people toward meaningful action are also significant components of this role.

Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy and Revenue Development

• Develop and execute NCBF’s annual fundraising plan with the Executive Director, staff, and volunteer partners.
• Lead fundraising campaigns—including Home for the Holidays, direct-response email and mail campaigns, house parties, and community-led fundraisers—with clear goals, timelines, revenue targets, and follow-up strategies.
• Track progress toward annual revenue goals and evaluate campaign performance to guide future strategy; this includes researching values-aligned fundraising opportunities to diversify revenue and strengthen NCBF’s long-term financial sustainability.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director on grant writing, foundation cultivation, and revenue strategy.

Donor Cultivation, Stewardship, and Major Gifts

• Build and manage a donor portfolio and major-gifts pipeline in partnership with the Executive Director.
• Coordinate donor research, outreach, cultivation, solicitation, and follow-up.
• Lead donor-appreciation efforts and develop strategies to strengthen donor retention, recurring giving, and long-term investment.
• Coordinate monthly donor calls and other opportunities to connect with NCBF.
• Create accessible, values-aligned resources and systems for house parties and individual or group fundraising.

Donor Services, Gift Administration, and Data Management

• Oversee the timely and accurate processing of gifts, acknowledgements, and donation forms, including importing and reconciling gifts from fundraising and payment platforms in collaboration with finance and operations staff.
• Develop clear procedures for donor services and gift processing, including maintaining secure access to fundraising platforms, accounts, and confidential donor information.
• Analyze fundraising and donor data to inform strategy, reporting, and continuous improvement.

Communications Strategy and Digital Engagement

• Develop and implement NCBF’s annual communications plan and editorial calendar.
• Create clear, compelling, and accessible communications that deepen public understanding of cash bail, wealth-based detention, and NCBF’s work overall.
• Oversee NCBF’s social media presence and manage the Volunteer Social Media Team; produce monthly newsletters with the Volunteer Story Team.
• Coordinate flyers, email appeals, social graphics, and other promotional content.
• Use website, email, social media, and campaign analytics to improve content and engagement.
• Ensure all communications align with NCBF’s mission, values, brand, and organizational priorities.

Storytelling, Media Relations, and Brand Stewardship

• Facilitate the Volunteer Story Team and coordinate story development with staff, volunteers, clients, and community partners.
• Create written, visual, and digital content that communicates NCBF’s impact and the harms of cash bail and pretrial detention.
• Establish practices that prevent exploitation, savior narratives, and unnecessary exposure while uplifting community dignity, power, and leadership.
• Develop a reusable story and impact-content pipeline connected to fundraising, organizing, and public education needs.
• Serve as NCBF’s primary media contact, coordinate spokesperson preparation with the Executive Director, and draft press releases, statements, and talking points.
• Build relationships with community-centered and values-aligned journalists and media platforms.
• Maintain NCBF’s brand guide and organizational assets, ensuring consistent use across platforms and materials.

Volunteer Leadership, Partnerships, and Reporting

• Recruit, onboard, train, coordinate, and support Donor/Fundraising, Social Media, and Story Team volunteers.
• Develop accessible role guides and training pathways, with clear expectations and regular check-ins.
• Address volunteer workload, access, training, and performance needs.
• Produce development and communications dashboards covering key metrics and risks.
• Partner with the Executive Director to prepare quarterly reports and presentations for NCBF’s Board of Directors.
• Document recurring processes and establish trained backup coverage for essential development and communications responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

• Commitment to NCBF’s mission, vision, and values, including racial equity, abolition, cultural humility, directly impacted leadership, and community-centered justice.
• Ability to work remotely in or near Snohomish, King, or Pierce Counties and reliably travel throughout the region.
• Experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor relations, communications, storytelling, marketing, community engagement, and/or a related field.
• Experience developing and executing fundraising or communications campaigns or other complex projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across varied audiences and platforms.
• Experience coordinating volunteers and/or community-based teams.
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to engage donors, volunteers, directly impacted community members, partners, and media representatives with care and in alignment with NCBF values.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with creativity, responsiveness, and accountability.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor, volunteer, client, and organizational information.
• Proficiency with—or the ability to quickly learn—donor databases, email-marketing platforms, website-management systems, social media platforms, and digital project-management tools.
• Availability for occasional evening and weekend volunteer meetings, fundraising activities, community events, and media needs.
• Fluent in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Lived experience or knowledge of Washington’s criminal punishment system, pretrial detention, and bail practices.
• Experience centering directly impacted people through consent-based and trauma-informed storytelling.
• Experience with donor cultivation, major gifts, recurring-donor programs, grant writing, and donor-retention strategies.
• Experience with Little Green Light, Donorbox, ActBlue, Benevity, Mailchimp, WordPress, Squarespace, Canva, and/or comparable platforms.
• Experience developing media relationships, responding to requests, or preparing press releases, statements, talking points, and opinion pieces.
• Experience using fundraising and communications data to evaluate performance and guide strategy.
• Strong project-management and editing skills.
• Graphic design, photography, video production, or other digital content-development experience.
• Fluency in an additional language is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Salary range: $65,000–$80,000
• Four-day workweek: Monday–Thursday
• 128 hours of combined PTO annually
