Role

Mountain States Legal Foundation’s Center for American Prosperity & Energy (“CAPE”) seeks an entry-level litigation attorney for immediate hire. MSLF is a nonprofit, public interest legal foundation founded in 1977 and dedicated to individual liberty, the right to own and use property, limited and ethical government, and the free enterprise system.  Key to our work is the legal staff that advances our mission and defends our nation’s founding principles in courts throughout the United States. CAPE leads MSLF’s litigation involving private property rights, responsible energy and natural resource development, and government actions that threaten the ability of individuals and businesses to use their land and resources productively.  We are a small team of dedicated professionals, and our attorneys are a critical part of MSLF’s team and should possess the passion, commitment, and strategic vision needed to drive our mission to new heights.

Responsibilities

This attorney will play a key role in CAPE’s work nationwide, assisting with complex litigation involving private property rights, energy and natural resource development, administrative overreach, and the free enterprise system. The attorney will also help evaluate potential cases and lay the groundwork for high impact litigation.  Responsibilities include significant factual and legal research and writing, motion practice, and appellate advocacy.

Qualifications

• 0-2 years of legal experience;
• Excellent research and writing skills;
• Licensed to practice law in Colorado or eligible to waive into the Colorado bar (will also consider recent graduates awaiting bar exam results);
• An enthusiastic team player;
• Preference for clerkship, journal, mock trial, and/or moot court experience;
• Prior experience in litigation is a plus;
• Passion for MSLF’s and CAPE’s missions, including a deep commitment to protecting private property rights, promoting responsible energy and natural resource development, defending free enterprise, and challenging government overreach.

MSLF provides attorneys with the opportunity to rapidly advance their careers and establish themselves as constitutional litigators.  This attorney will work directly on high-impact cases across the country involving private property rights, energy and natural resource development, administrative overreach, and free enterprise from California to New York and everywhere in-between.  This attorney will not be relegated to document review and research memos, but instead will be a vital part of the litigation process and will have the chance to advance and eventually lead litigation based on their own drive and ability to demonstrate proficiency. Employment Type: Full-Time; Exempt

Compensation Package: Salary is commensurate with experience in the range of $75-80K. MSLF’s compensation package includes a 403(b)-retirement plan (employer match up to 4%), generous health benefits, an employer-paid dental plan, vacation and sick days, and opportunities for professional growth and development.
