Job Title: Sheet Metal Technician
Job Description
The Sheet Metal Technician plays a key role on the Capital Planning & Facilities team, helping to create, maintain, and preserve a functional and sustainable campus environment. This position focuses on installing, fabricating, and maintaining sheet metal components across campus facilities, with a strong emphasis on hand railings as well as a variety of other building and equipment applications.
Responsibilities
- Perform sheet metal repairs on mobile and stationary equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts using hand tools and portable power tools.
- Install door hardware including hinges, panic bars, thresholds, and related components.
- Install motorized projector screens, mounts, and toilet partitions in campus facilities.
- Maintain and repair kitchen equipment, roof gutters, and overhead doors to support building functionality.
- Install and repair roofing and flashing materials, including work on rooftop systems.
- Drill and punch holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets to prepare components for assembly or installation.
- Fasten seams and joints using welds, bolts, cements, rivets, solder, caulk, metal drive clips, and bonding agents to assemble products or repair sheet metal items.
- Fabricate and install sheet metal components, including hand railings and other architectural or structural elements across campus.
- Follow safety procedures and use appropriate tools and equipment while working in the fabrication shop and on campus sites.
- Collaborate with the facilities team to respond to campus needs, including work during weather-related emergencies.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience with MIG and TIG welding.
- Proficiency in sheet metal fabrication and installation.
- Hands-on experience installing and repairing sheet metal components, including hand railings and building elements.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints for fabrication and installation work.
- Strong skills in MIG, TIG, and stick welding techniques.
- Experience working with roofing systems, including TPO and other rooftop materials.
- Competence using hand tools and portable power tools for cutting, grinding, and finishing metal surfaces.
- Ability to drill and punch holes in metal accurately for fasteners and assembly.
- Knowledge of fastening methods including welding, bolting, riveting, soldering, caulking, and bonding.
- Capability to safely move and handle materials and equipment up to 75 pounds.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a fabrication shop environment.
- Experience maintaining building components such as kitchen equipment, gutters, overhead doors, and toilet partitions.
- Familiarity with installing door hardware, projector screens, and mounts in institutional or commercial settings.
- Comfort working at heights using ladders and stairs for rooftop and elevated installations.
- Ability to work outdoors and in inclement weather when campus needs require.
- Attention to detail in finishing metal surfaces and ensuring high-quality workmanship.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to facilities and maintenance procedures.

Work Environment
This role is based primarily in a fabrication shop located off campus, with regular travel to campus facilities for installation and repair work. The position follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work frequently requires remaining stationary for periods of time, as well as ascending and descending ladders and stairs to access various work areas, including rooftops. The technician must be able to move and lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Work may occur outdoors and in inclement weather such as rain, snow, and ice when campus conditions demand facilities support, particularly during weather-related emergencies. The environment involves regular use of welding equipment, hand tools, and portable power tools in both shop and field settings.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $42.00/hr.
