JOB SUMMARY:
Jefferson County Roads & Transportation is seeking well-qualified Senior Traffic Control Technicians to play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic throughout the county.


Senior Traffic Control Technicians are responsible for both overseeing and participating in the installation, programming, and maintenance of a wide range of traffic control infrastructure. This includes traffic signals, intersection control systems, street lights, surveillance cameras, and street signage. A key focus of the position is performing complex electronic work, such as programming microchips and configuring traffic signal phases, which are essential for the proper operation of electronic traffic control cabinets and emergency siren systems. Senior Technicians are also expected to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to minimize disruptions and maintain system reliability. In addition to technical responsibilities, these technicians prepare comprehensive traffic reports that identify and recommend necessary changes to traffic control at intersections. These changes may involve modifications to signal timing, the addition of new signals, or alterations to lane configurations. Once identified, they communicate these recommendations to relevant departments, contractors, or stakeholders to facilitate timely implementation. Senior Traffic Control Technicians manage incoming work orders related to installations and repairs and assign these tasks to subordinate personnel. They also provide on-the-job supervision, guidance, and training to ensure high standards of performance and safety are maintained. While they operate with a degree of independence, their work is performed under the general supervision of senior traffic engineering staff. Performance is typically evaluated based on the completion and quality of assigned work orders and the accuracy and clarity of submitted reports.

$58,032 - $90,022

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

• Class B CDL.
• Must obtain a level III International Municipality Signal Association (IMSA) Certification within 12 months of employment.
• Work experience applying and adhering to MUTCD in the maintenance and installation of traffic signals.
• Work experience reading and interpreting electrical or electronic schematics and blueprints.
• Work experience applying and adhering to the National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Work experience in electrical and electronic troubleshooting pertaining to traffic control devices.

TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

• Licensed by the State of Alabama as a Journey-level Electrician.
• Associates degree in Electronics.
• Work experience with fiber optics as it pertains to traffic control devices.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

• Performs electrical work (e.g., running wires, cutting loops, etc.) associated with the installation, maintenance, and replacement of traffic signals, street lights, ballpark lights, and emergency sirens utilizing the National Electrical Code and related tools in order to power electrical components of projects.
• Performs electronic work (e.g., programming microchips, programming traffic signal phases, etc.) associated with the installation, programming, and troubleshooting of electronic traffic control cabinets and emergency sirens utilizing electronic theories, principles, and related tools in order to power electronic components of projects.
• Oversees and participates in the installation of traffic signals, intersections, street lights, cameras and street signs.
• Prepares for daily activities and manages projects onsite by reviewing work orders, checking inventory, managing equipment, driving to worksites, coordinating work with various entities, and documenting various aspects of work to ensure that crews are able to complete their work safely and according to policies and procedures.
• Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as workshops, warehouses, or stations, and in field locations such as external construction worksites. Work involves the use of various hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. Workers may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc.
