Certified Senior Medical Assistant- Primary Care Group (King Harbor/The Woodlands)

Overview Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group. The Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position functions as an expert with highly competent knowledge in technical examinations and treatments. Under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Nurse, the Sr. MA performs delegated medical assistant tasks for assigned patient populations and provides high-quality support of patient care and services. The Sr. MA oversees appropriate scope of practice (e.g., Hand Hygiene Validator, EMR super-user). The role assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes, and may schedule patient appointments, ensure medical necessity compliance, and verify eligibility for care. The Sr. MA serves as preceptor and clinical resource to Medical Assistants, training and orienting others as appropriate. Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.). Experience Five years medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline. Licenses and Certifications Required: Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT. BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association. Preferred CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ACA). Skills and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially where patient or employee safety or security is involved. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers with a customer service focus and use of positive language principles. Knowledge of medical practice and care of patients; ability to assist with examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures; knowledge of medical equipment and instruments. Ability to develop and maintain clinical quality assurance to maintain accurate medical records. Demonstrates a learning attitude toward problem solving, using good reasoning and judgment. Provide safe, patient-centered, compassionate and competent care. Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work-related purposes. Completes required continuous training and education, including department-specific requirements; maintains current certifications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public. Ability to work with peers in a team environment. Understanding of the patient population as it relates to the clinical disease process. Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work-related purposes. Demonstrates advanced assessment competencies appropriate for level of practice. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Role models and promotes a positive work environment that actively assists the interprofessional care team to achieve optimal department results. Independently executes duties of preceptor and serves as a clinical resource, guiding colleagues’ thought processes to provide optimal patient care. Provides structured feedback with examples. Service Essential Functions Provides care to patients visiting the clinic under the direct supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse, or clinic leadership. Complete pre-visit planning and documentation in collaboration with the provider team. Obtains and documents vital signs, chief complaints, medication reviews, and medical/social history; documents care in the patient’s EMR and all diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures per policy. Follows up with patients as appropriate to ensure compliance with recommendations, medications, labs/imaging results, and special visits. Encourages activation of MyChart. Provides care coordination with hospital, ED, consulting physicians, and community resources as appropriate, including handling patient inquiries. Role models behaviors and skills to improve patient satisfaction scores through peer-to-peer accountability. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Reports observations and problems to the physician and/or nurse; recognizes abnormal clinical findings and reports them appropriately; ensures patient privacy and safety. Performs routine tests (e.g., EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, pregnancy tests) accurately. Sterilizes instruments and equipment; maintains exam and treatment rooms, supplies, and equipment. Finance Essential Functions Uses resources efficiently; stocks exam rooms, takes inventory, and orders supplies. Manages time effectively; prioritizes daily tasks and coordinates with colleagues to meet department demands. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Develops skills of team members and participates in ongoing education and department-based development activities. Offers innovative solutions through participation in performance improvement activities. Completes and updates My Development plan on an ongoing basis. On-call status varies by role. Travel Travel within the Houston Metropolitan area may be required; travel outside the area is not typical.
