Site: Newton‑Wellesley Hospital Job Summary The Sterile Processing Technician II ensures the highest quality standards are met by departmental procedures and established industry standards. The role incorporates the vision, values and mission of the organization and is responsible for disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization and distribution of instruments, scopes and supplies used in operating rooms, maternity, emergency department and throughout the hospital. The technician performs chemical, mechanical and biological testing of equipment and complies with NWH Policies and Procedures, IAHCSMM and CBSPD standards. Core Responsibilities Perform disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instrumentation. Leak test, evaluate, clean/disinfect and process flexible endoscopes. Inspect instrumentation for cleanliness and proper functioning. Assemble surgical instruments and kits using kit assembly information. Package, wrap and prepare kits/instrument loads for sterilization. Load, operate, monitor and document all decontamination, disinfection and sterilization equipment. Perform and document all chemical, mechanical and biological monitoring of sterilizers. Respond to emergency case requirements of the surgical team and other departments. Assess instruments, components and supplies for adequacy and request replacements as needed. Pick supplies and/or instruments for surgical cases using surgeon preference cards. Stock adult, pediatric and neonate code carts, intubation boxes. Function independently in the absence of the manager or supervisor. Utilize computer systems – existing knowledge of EPIC and CSIQ/SPM preferred. Assist in training new staff and volunteers. May rotate between main SPD, GI, OSC Departments as needed. Perform all other duties as required. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of Central Processing Technology Course. Experience: At least three (3) years of sterile processing experience in an operative setting. Licenses, Certifications: Registered Central Service Technician (C.R.C.S.T) or Certified Sterile Process/Distribution Technician (C.S.P.D.T) or equivalent. Knowledge and Skills: Proper preparation of instruments for sterilization. Technique for biological testing of sterilizers. Understanding of steam and Sterrad low‑temperature sterilization and record‑keeping. Cleaning, disinfecting and decontamination of instrumentation. ATP testing on endoscopes and surfaces. Use of endoscope processor and associated record‑keeping. Cleaning and disinfecting flexible scopes. Distribution systems operation. Computer system utilization. Providing cases to the operating room. Participation in quality improvement activities.
