Medical Laboratory Scientist

Summary Under the general supervision of a Specialist, Manager, or Director, performs various complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Pathology Department. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret test results, especially abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities Receives specimens, confirms patient identification, validates the appropriateness of physician orders, and labels specimens, exercising care to avoid contamination. Prepares and determines suitability of solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures, confirming expiration dates. Out-of-stock and quality control materials are tracked and logged once opened. Performs complex clinical tests using methodologies including EIA, IFA, chemiluminescence, RIA, electrophoresis, immunoassay, and colorimetry. Monitors testing procedures and parameters, interprets results, and collaborates with other technologists to confirm unusual results or procedural variations. Records and reports test results to ordering physicians or DOH as required. Assists in the instruction of students and residents, and in the orientation and training of new employees to assigned laboratory sections. Performs quality control checks on equipment and reagents, records values, and uses results to identify potential problems. Participates in development of new tests and procedures, making recommendations for modifications and establishment of new protocols. Monitors, sets up, calibrates equipment, troubleshoots operational problems, and performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs with manufacturer support as needed. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, work benches, and related tools. Participates in quality assurance and improvement programs as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Basic knowledge and a Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science such as chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a closely related field, or equivalent education and experience defined by CLIA standards. National certification by ASCP or equivalent in any offered category (Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology) or eligible for national certification with laboratory training including completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program (ABHES, NAACLS, or other HHS‑approved organization). One year of experience in a clinical laboratory. Skills & Abilities Ability to operate equipment and instruments and to perform all procedures and tests within the assigned laboratory section accurately. Physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret tests. Physical ability to stand and work at laboratory benches. Knowledge of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns relevant to patient care. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances. Visual strain while closely examining specimens. Regularly required to stand, lift, and carry supplies. Benefits Pay Range: $29.53 – $48.72 per hour.
