Senior Substation Engineer (Owners Engineer - Renewable Energy)

This is an opportunity for an experienced Substation Engineer who enjoys influencing major engineering decisions, reducing project risk, and serving as the technical authority behind complex transmission and substation projects.

What You'll Do

As the High Voltage Substation Subject Matter Expert, you will:

• Provide technical leadership for utility-scale renewable energy projects throughout the U.S. and Canada.

• Review and evaluate engineering packages developed by EPC contractors, engineering consultants, and external partners.

• Assess and provide technical guidance on:

• Physical substation design

• Protection & control systems

• Single-line diagrams

• Engineering calculations and drawings

• Equipment specifications

• Power flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination studies

• Ensure designs comply with utility requirements, industry standards, codes, and project specifications.

• Identify technical risks, design deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement before they impact project execution.

• Support utility interconnection efforts and transmission-related engineering activities.

• Review procurement packages and vendor submittals for major electrical equipment, including transformers and high-voltage breakers.

• Collaborate closely with civil, structural, electrical, construction, operations, and project management teams.

• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.

• Participate in technical reviews, industry events, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.

• 7+ years of high-voltage substation engineering experience.

• Strong experience with transmission-class voltages (115kV, 230kV, or similar).

• Deep understanding of:

• Substation physical design

• Protection and control engineering

• High-voltage equipment

• Transmission systems and associated equipment

• Electrical studies and system analysis

• Utility requirements, engineering standards, and applicable codes

• Experience reviewing and approving complex engineering deliverables.

• Background working with utilities, EPC contractors, engineering consultancies, or large infrastructure developers.

• Ability to independently solve complex technical challenges and communicate recommendations to diverse stakeholders.

• Strong organizational, documentation, and project prioritization skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.

• Utility-scale renewable energy experience (solar, wind, or energy storage).

• Experience supporting utility interconnection applications and studies.

• Familiarity with CAISO or other regional transmission organization requirements.

• Experience using tools such as:

• ETAP

• ASPEN

• PSCAD

• Transmission line engineering experience.

• Previous mentoring or technical leadership experience.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $135000.00 - $160000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
