Position Summary
Carpenter apprentice performs tasks involving physical labor for residential and commercial job sites. Operate a variety of hand and power tools. Construct, erect, install, or repair structures and fixtures made of wood and comparable materials; building frameworks, including partitions, joists, studding, and rafters; and wood stairways, window and door frames, and flooring. May also install cabinets, siding, drywall, and batt, roll, blown in insulation. Clean and prepare sites and clean up rubble and debris and remove waste materials. Assist other craft workers.
Help carpenters by performing duties requiring less skill. Duties include using, supplying, or holding materials or tools, and cleaning work area and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in construction projects
- Maintain a clean job site: pick up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards
- Handle and store materials
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
- Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
- Install structures or fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware, using carpenters' hand or power tools.
- Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
- Erect scaffolding or ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Inspect ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged structures.
- Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools.
- Install rough door and window frames, subflooring, fixtures, or temporary supports in structures undergoing construction or repair.
- Ensure proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed; bring problems to the attention of the Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Must possess and maintain a valid and appropriate state driver’s license and auto insurance coverage as required by the state prior to employment
- Must possess 1 year in carpentry
- Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions and communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule
- Ability to lift heavy objects, walk, and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions
- Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry 60 to 100 pound objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively throw an object. Excellent stamina is required. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust. The noise level in the work environment is generally loud.
